If you want the best way to drop weight and get in shape, there is no alternative. It feels awful while you're doing it, but you feel really accomplished once you've done some good work.

The Four Pillars of Getting in Shape:
1. Sleep
2. Weight Lifting
3. Cardio
4. Nutrition

Running is one of the best cardio exercises, but you also need the other 3 to get in shape. So running is good, but you gotta do more than just run run run. :)

I do distance running which is the best way to get in shape. Just a few miles/kilometers a day.

That depends on your own body, some people sweat like mad with few kilometres and others need a lot of time to "feel" the effort. A good idea is to start low, lets say, 3 km or so, and then test yourself and see if you can go higher, and also increase speed. I personally prefer to measure time instead of distance, lets say, first day 20 minutes, then 25 minutes, then 25 faster minutes... good luck from a fellow runner!
