They're called 'Mockbusters'.

Essentially, whenever a popular movie comes out, some low-rate, B-movie studio (such as 'The Asylum') brings out an extremely similar title in order to cash in on it.

Some examples include:

Snakes on a Plane -> Snakes on a Train
Alien vs Predator -> Alien vs Hunter
Transformers -> Transmorphers
Ratatouille -> Ratatoing
E.T. -> Mac and Me

Oh my god! It was out a whole three days earlier? They must have totally stole that original idea, and created that whole snakes on a plane movie in those three days. No way they came up with the idea first.

Snakes on a plane was marcketed on the internet for about a year before it came out. Enough time to make a mockbuster of it
