The reason you can't bring large quantities of liquids on board is that in 2006 there was a plot to simultaneously take down 10 aircraft with peroxide-based liquid explosives.

When on board, a sugary drink would have been mixed with hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide and the other ingredients become extremely unstable and explosive if mixed to a specific strength.

On the ground, the solutions were entirely stable.

AND NOW YOU KNOW. and knowing is half the battle
User avatar #100 to #51 - swimmingprodigy (05/22/2012) [-]
why would it be completely stable on the ground but not in the air? Airplanes are pressurized
User avatar #104 to #100 - sirguyman (05/22/2012) [-]
What I mean is, before they mix the peroxide with sugar, it's stable. So, when they would have been on the ground, there would have been no way for the solution to explode.

When mixed, even the charge from a camera flash unit would set it off, whereas, before it's mixed, you could toss it on a fire without an explosion.

I might be mistaken, but I believe the reason why they don't allow liquids is since a terrorist group tried to blow up a plan by mixing different liquids thus creating a bomb. I suppose some liquid chemicals would react to oxygen, but then it has to be opened, so if they throw it away without it being opened it would be safe. I don't think a terrorist would bring one bottle of something that could blow up without need a chemical reaction, since it should have already blown up. don't take my word for it though

I don't understand why terrorists try so desperately to get bombs on airplanes when they could just blow up an entire airport. That would cause more damage.
User avatar #106 to #68 - sirguyman (05/22/2012) [-]
Because plane crashes are scary. The idea of terrorism is to make you feel threatened.

Explosions in buildings happen (relatively speaking) all the time, so a plane crash draws headlines like a ************ .

Because when you're on the plane in the air there's nowhere for the people on board to go. Plus if they take control of it they can make it crash into something like two giant buildings in New York

A small bottle of liquid is not a bomb..
It could however be used as one of the ingredients for a bomb.
Airport security is there for a ******* reason
User avatar #102 to #31 - swimmingprodigy (05/22/2012) [-]
To date the TSA has stopped/uncovered 0 terrorist plots
User avatar #40 to #31 - SuitUp (05/22/2012) [-]
Too bad it's been shown numerous times that airport security utterly fails at it's job. Any determined group could quite easily blow up or hijack a plane. People are scared of that because of 11/9 etc. but really it makes no sense whatsoever to target an plane. The amount of damage compared to what you can achieve by targetting the actual airport is tiny. Oh it's also very possible to have all the stuff you would need to blow up a plane in bottles under the current limit. Airport security is a giant, disfunctional, placebo.

Security in the us is a bit of a joke.

I had to sign a paper saying that i wasn't a terrorist and i didn't kill any jews during WWII...
User avatar #53 to #23 - MonsieurOctopus (05/22/2012) [-]
I was flying to Florida a couple years ago and my brother was using his school backpack as a carry-on bag and accidentally left his plastic math compass in a pocket that had it's point broken off. Five security guards got called over and they almost didn't let us on the plane.
#35 to #23 - John Cena (05/22/2012) [-]
ive flown through nearly every major airport in the US, and take almost 100 flights per year and have never heard of, seen, or had to do anything like this... I seriously doubt that actually happened, as it makes no ******* sense. I also believe that you probably made this up to go along with the popular opinion that US security is ridiculous and just wanted thumbs.

Actually I've had to do the exact same thing, and a customs lady once asked me if I was traveling with "the intent to illegally smuggle banned narcotics".

Why the **** would I ever admit that to someone? It's like, "Oh damn, you caught me. I was planning on leveling Washington, DC with my dirty bomb but I suppose I'll just give it to you now."

Actually they only allow 100mL of liquid onto the plane because of equilibrium of the air. The air pressure is a lot lower up there, even in the pressurized cabin. our current sea level Air Pressure is 14.7 PSI. If you bring a container of liquid that has more than 100mL, it may be lethal. Because of the lower air pressure, the container can explode since all that air pressure is not holding the container from bursting. Now think, you are on a plane, and you here something explode. You are probably ganna get a heart attack, of thinking its a terrorist. This happened to my mom, she brought a WATERBOTTLE that was full, she opened it on the plane and it exploded all over her and the person next to her. Wouldn't you agree? A while back Kim Kardashian's ass implants exploded on the plane, which is a fine example how air pressure affects everything.
User avatar #113 to #107 - sirguyman (05/22/2012) [-]
Actually, the restrictions were put into place in 2006 after a plot involving liquid based bombs was discovered.

nitroglycerin is also an over the counter drug
#114 to #113 - anisbanana (05/22/2012) [-]
liquid based bombs existed for a while already... For example, nitroglycerin, the main ingredient in dynamite, which is an extremely combustable liquid. Pure nitroglycerin in a hair spray bottle can blow the **** up the entire plane to pieces
User avatar #118 to #114 - sirguyman (05/22/2012) [-]
This is true. It was actually a peroxide they planned to use. Very similar in effect, but stable until mixed with a sugary solution, so no risk of blowing yourself sky high on the drive to the airport.
#121 to #118 - anisbanana (05/22/2012) [-]
yeah, its called a tang bomb. All you need is hydrogin peroxide, tang breakfast mix, and a flash camera to activate the explosion, and creates a hell of a bomb. Also, when you head iodine, it creates a purplish gas, when filtered thru with nitroglycerin, creates and unimaginable bomb. BREATHING on the finished powder can detonate it. Very unstable.

We were flying back from Disney World to Washington DC a few years ago, and I bought a Magic 8 Ball for at the airport before security for my girlfriend at the time, and after I waited nearly an hour in the Security line, the confiscated her 8 Ball because they suspected us of smuggling illegal chemicals into the country.

or snap a cd in half and have two very effective daggers... but what good will that do you? If you murder someone on a plane, its kinda obvious who did it, and there isnt an escape route... and the chance of not getting overpowered by the other 200+ people on your flight?

Well the thing is that if you kill someone on the plane everyone else will be to afraid of doing anything. They know that they will be able to overpower you but you will probably kill at least one of them if they try.

Air port security is just to make flyers feel safe, you could have very long thin blades along the lining of your bag or fallowing the wheel frame bars without anying seeing. You can bring on a number of toxins or proteins which could kill everyone on the plane and would take up so little space as to not ever be noticed. If your goal is to cause panic you could easily throw stuff into the trash cans before going through security that would go unnoticed due to the volume of people throwing away item over the like 10 nanoliter limit or whatever it is these days.

Security and police are just as much about presentation and public perseption than they are about prevention. Read the book Freakanomics or watch the movie I think its on netflix about the Japanese fraud.

A lot of the security checkpoint is a deterrent more than an effective means of stopping an event happening, but it makes it a damn site harder.. I have worked Airport security, and some of the things we stop going on board.. be glad security are there..

As for your idea of hiding knives in the metal cut outs.. a good x ray operator should be able to spot the tampered metal struts/wheel base, and the loader should be looking for signs of bags that have been modfied, but it will be entirely person dependent..

Yes, you can sneak a small amount of toxins onboard and bring down the plane/kill everyone.. but in the grand scheme of things 300~ people is not a "huge" attack.. it is dreadful.. but compared to a hijacked plane being used as the weapon itself? negligible
