I was taught the only sin with homosexuality was that gay butt secks was the only sin because it yields no children, and therefore If you are christian and call homosexuals an abomination, you are right up there with them if you have even masturbated or had protected sex.

TL;DR- Uneducated Christians give many of us a bad name.

Used this argument plenty of times. "It never says gay marriage itself is a sin." "Well, they're going to have sex, duh!" "...But that's not what the act of marriage means." "Stop targeting me!" Usual way it goes.
User avatar #85 to #83 - tomoyomomo (05/21/2012) [-]
Yeah right? When does it ever say a two men or two women cannot be married? People need to understand their faith before they run their mouths.

Personally, I think there is no problem with gay marriage, I just don't think that they should be raising kids. Children need a strong male and female influence in their lives, but other than that, knock yourself out.
User avatar #103 to #83 - lodestone (05/21/2012) [-]
Well technically a marriage isn't complete until it's been consummated, but that doesn't really invalidate your point. I think the real point is that Christians can think anything they want about homosexuals, as long as it doesn't keep them from obtaining the same benefits from the government as everyone else, such as being able to visit their spouse in an ICU.

I'm a Christian and I find this post funny. People like to quote Leviticus for the verses against homosexuality and then when people quote these other verses from the same book, they'll say that we don't follow those teachings anymore. It is true that we don't follow a lot of the teachings from the Old Testament anymore, especially Leviticus, as those were Jewish laws and no longer applied to us once Jesus died on the cross. There aren't many verses in the bible that are clear on the subject of homosexuality, so I just do what all Christians should be doing anyway, whether we believe it's right or wrong, and that is love them for who they are and not what they do, because it is not our place to judge their actions anyway.
User avatar #111 to #58 - killbob (05/21/2012) [-]
if i could say one thing to a homophobe that uses leviticus...

"But didn't Jesus die on the cross so we wouldn't be bound by Hebrew law and our sins would be absolved?"
#209 to #58 - anon (05/21/2012) [-]
28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground. ”
Homosexuality is a sin because it goes against gods will, that is '' increase in number''
I am not christian, but thats what the bible says
User avatar #215 to #209 - deltadeltadelta (05/21/2012) [-]
So are priests, monks and nuns committing a sin by not procreating?
#231 to #209 - melodyriver (05/21/2012) [-]
First of all, I really don't think that verse would apply. That was toward Adam and Eve. They were told to have children so they could populate the Earth, as they were the only humans at that time. But I'm sure people don't go to hell because they never had children. If everyone had to have kids...that would be a lot of kids. But regardless of whether it relates or not, it still doesn't go against my point at all. What I'm trying to say is regardless of whether we believe it is wrong or not, we should still love them and treat them exactly the same.
User avatar #126 to #58 - themuffinmanman (05/21/2012) [-]
Sir, I love you. You are a genius and know your stuff. I try to tell people this all the time. I absolutely hate it when people use the Old Testament against Christians when Jesus died so we wouldn't have to be bound by all the laws and regulations from the Jewish culture before. Why can't there be more people like you on this site? I have gained faith in this site once more.

Ma'am* But thanks a lot:) I like to help people understand what real Christians are supposed to be like. We're not all hateful and a lot of us actually know about our religion haha. And while I don't claim to have it all right, I know I'm on the right path and I can help others by showing them that Christians really aren't so bad when they know what they're doing.
User avatar #135 to #133 - themuffinmanman (05/21/2012) [-]
Ooooooooh. Sorry bout that, ma'am. Should never assume. It's sad that people think of us as hateful, but you gotta try to keep pushing the right way forward I guess.
#137 to #135 - melodyriver (05/21/2012) [-]
No problem. Most people assume I'm a guy. Obviously I can't be a girl and have sense haha. Nah, I don't mind though:) And really the saddest part is that a lot of us really are hateful. I don't think they ever got the message about loving everyone equally regardless of their sin, as we are all sinners and equal in the Lord's eyes. And while I think preaching against sins to those who are willing to listen is perfectly fine, insulting them and shoving it down their throats is far from the same thing. The thing I like to keep in mind is to act like Christ in all things. Jesus wouldn't go around protesting about homosexuals, nor would he force Christianity on people. I like to be polite about it, show them how Christianity can really be, and let them make their choice, as it is not my choice to make. I have made my choice and the only thing left for me to do is show others the love of God.
User avatar #139 to #137 - themuffinmanman (05/21/2012) [-]
Yeh. In fact earlier tonight at my HS Fellowship we had a message about how you can't simply stay the same when trying to spread God's word, you must break the mold and do it in a way that people will like and make it easy for them to get to know God. You shouldn't be comfortable when you tell people about God, because it isn't easy, but you still need to do it anyways. I'd expand on the topic but it is just hitting midnight and I got good ol' school tomorrow at 7 AM :/ so I need to hit the hay. Nice meeting you :D

Well the bible is suppose to be Gods law. So it really shouldn't be an issue that its over 2000 years old, since Gods words are final, if we change what he originally put in the bible isn't that changing what God word actually was? So the New testament and such aren't actually Gods words but human words pretending to be be God, and thus breaking the commandment of using Gods name in vain. Bring it on red thumbs.
User avatar #134 to #120 - themuffinmanman (05/21/2012) [-]
I won't thumb you down, but I'll tell you what my beliefs are on this topic ^^.

Waaaay back when the Old Testament was written, times were a lot different and God treated people differently. The laws were different and they
weren't_ allowed to be changed because they were final. Even the Old Testament wasn't Gods words, but human words pretending to be God's, just like the New Testament. He told the prophets some stuff and they then wrote it down. The laws were pretty harsh though, what with the offerings and sacrifices of livestock, which, by the way, please don't complain about. Animals are killed for food and other stuff all the time, and he sacrificed his own son for Christ's sake (see what I did there :)? ). It worked well, but it was pretty complicated.

Then came Jesus. He was a pretty cool fella. He taught everyone new ways of God's word since he was God's son sent to tell the people. Back then there were no Christians. There were only Jews. Jesus Christ founded Christianity with his teachings, which were more about having a relationship with God and reaching out to others. He was always with those who were outcast from society and teaching them instead of the wealthy. He then was crucified on the cross for all of our sins and made a lot of the unneeded laws from Jewish culture gone! So Jesus' words were from God, and his apostles wrote them down in their own ways and that is why there are 4 gospels telling the same story, just in different ways.

So Old Testament, old laws. New Testament, new way of looking at things. I hope you understood some of this, I know it can be pretty confusing, and sorry for the wall of text. I'm not trying to shove my religion down your throat either, if that is what I'm coming off as, I'm sorry. I tried not to be that way.

Tl;dr
Old Testament became somewhat overruled by Jesus and what he taught.

Waaaay back when the Old Testament was written, times were a lot different and God treated people differently.?
1.The new testament was also written 2000 years ago,if the old testament is wrong for being old,the new testament also
2.where is the justice in being subject to different laws just because you were born a few years before a part of god decided it was time to come back to earth and sacrifice himself to make himself to forget the original sin?
3.The whole christianism is based on the idea of ''Like change, nothing can cause itself, and like change there must be a First Cause, called God'';
now, what is the cause of the advent of christ?God is perfect, perfection cant suffer changes because it would lose its perfection, therefore God cant suffer changes, therefore God couldnt have changed his mind about humanity or about any subject because its first thought about it was the correct and perfect one,Therefore he could have never decided to feel pity for humanity, therefore there is no cause for christ advent and christ never came to earth.
Judaism is the only abrahamic religion which makes sense, they dont think god is a teenage girl ''now i love humanity, now i dont, now i do,now i dont''

Its just the Jesus teaches to love thy neighbor, regardless of race, creed or sexuality. Jesus was sent down by god to destroy religion anyways because it was corrupt, any person who claims to be christian and "throws stones" at other people for being who they are is not a christian and are nothing but hypocrites.

Although I'm going to be red thumbed into total oblivion for saying this I will say it anyway.
I am under the impression the Jesus Christ is histories greatest con-artist. He managed to convince a stupid large amount of people that he was a spawn/mortal incarnation of God. I was willing to bet that most others who did that in those times were stoned to death or the like. Jesus pulled off this farce to such perfection that not only did people believe him, they created an entire religion based solely around him that 2000 years after his death, still stands strong.

But in all honesty I do not have any quarrels with religion. MOST Religious people use their religion as a guide to good morals and as an answer to the greater questions in life. The texts in each religion are often taken with a grain of salt and are put up to interpretation of the reader so that they can be applied appropriately to the current times. These same people use religion as a means by which to drive them to do great things in their life. The main problem that causes this massive war between religions and atheist are the extremists who are so blinded by their own stupidity that they cannot just understand that noone knows exactly who is right and who is wrong when it comes to the big questions in life. The media only shows these extremist because it sells better than 'Today a Christian went to church then conversed with his Atheist friends.'

TL;DR Read the damn post you pussy.

most morals and values we accept today are in the bilbe. religion is meant to let people have a good, RESPECTFUL life and cure them of their insecureties about death. The problem is that people have gone too far to pursue the word of god and started to kill and opress in his name. So yeah, it was intended as something good, and such was with all religions, also the pagan ones (which are awesome most of the time).

Also, I am satanic, but I do not underestimate the original purpose of religion.

I'm not religious in any way, but I think of it more as "Everything says god is real, but I'll stand strong in my belief that he is."

While I don't find the argument of "you can't disprove god, therefore he is real." a strong one. There is the fact that you CAN'T disprove it. Therefore, it is entirely acceptable to believe there's something out there beyond life, and that it's where we go when we die. Part of me likes to believe the little lie that there is some form of an afterlife, but the scientific part of me says that when my brain ceases to work, who I am will cease to exist, and therefore it won't matter to me anymore.

Kind of heart breaking to be honest.
