Well when I was growing up I was raised to be Christian, but no matter how hard I tried I just didn't believe it; I was just going through the motions. It's just not something I can grab on to, so I won't call myself one, y'know? If I'm wrong and I go to hell then I'll just have to deal with that

Wrong way to do it yes, but their heart is in the right place. I don't believe in heaven or hell or god but this person tries to saves my soul. Then there are other people who don't even bother trying to save my soul. As much as I dislike someone forcing their beliefs on me I understand where they're coming from.

Yeah, also the bible wasn't written by any divine being but by mere humans. It says there that Cain told God that anyone who saw him would kill him but there were only like three people in the world at that time so wtf? It's going to sound weird but even though I believe in God, i think there is a lot of made up **** , particularly in the old testament. Also, I have my own reasons to believe in God.

Atheists: people who have read about and understand other religions and decide to not believe in them

cunts: people do don't believe in a religion to look cool/smart (pic related)
User avatar #279 to #260 - rhc (05/21/2012) [-]
i don't fall under either of these. inb4 i'm a cunt.

i have not educated myself (other than world history classes) about religion. however, i've been atheist for sure since second grade, 10 years ago, way before atheism became a fad. i'm just atheist because it doesn't make any logical sense to believe in anything supernatural.

(not taking either side here)
Atheists tend to only look at or know the bad parts about the bible. I'm not saying I agree with the entire book but it has some fairly good messages in there too, I.e. Love thy Neighbour, Judge not lest ye be judged yourself. Why can't we just ignore the bad messages and use our own sense of morals to look past those parts but still learn from the better sections? And if you don't want to believe any of it, then that's cool too, make up your own mind. Nothing wrong with either side really.
User avatar #110 to #101 - Snookbone (05/20/2012) [-]
I'm slightly confused. If we already know what the "good" and "bad" sections are, doesn't that already show us that we have that morality and we don't need to learn from the scripture?
User avatar #111 to #110 - cygnuswithasmile (05/21/2012) [-]
Good point, but why don't we abridge the books, remove all the crap that shouldn't be and then pass it onto the next generations so that they might learn from it.
User avatar #115 to #111 - Snookbone (05/21/2012) [-]
That's exactly what Emporer Constantine tried to do in the 4th Century AD. I guess their filters were a bit different from ours...
User avatar #119 to #115 - cygnuswithasmile (05/21/2012) [-]
Well yeh, times change all the time, we would have to filter the book regularly for it to still be relevant today.

#151 to #101 - schaefdr (05/21/2012) [-]
you're absolutely right. it definitely conveys great messages to live by. The problem rises when you have people being too strict to what the Bible is saying. Same thing can be applied to our constitution. The founding fathers wrote it only thinking about the world they live in at that time. Our constitution if we wrote one now would probably be considerably different from the one we have, just like if the Bible was rewritten (which is impossible).
