1) It is not a Star it is a sun.
Stars do not technically exist as they're all just suns.
We called them stars because we did not know they were suns like our own at the time.

2) It is not a dwarf either.

3) They're not always white.
Some can be red and others can be light blue.

How is it not a dwarf or a star? The ******* question was asking what are characteristics of a "white dwarf star". According to Merriam-Webster, definition 4 of "dwarf": a star (as the sun) of ordinary or low luminosity and relatively small mass and size.
Confirmed by National Geographic: "White dwarfs typically have a radius just .01 times that of our own sun, but their mass is about the same."
Nat. Geo on "the sun": "The sun is a big star."
And Encyclopedia Britannica on"dwarf star": "dwarf star, any star of average or low luminosity, mass, and size. Important subclasses of dwarf stars are white dwarfs (see white dwarf star) and red dwarfs. Dwarf stars include so-called main-sequence stars, among which is the Sun. the sun is a star, we named it the sun like we named our moon luna and this planet earth.

dwarf is a stellar class, like hyper-giant/giant.

white dwarfs are the remains of normal sized star, like our sun.
red/brown dwarfs aren't remains but rather very tiny stars they don't accurately name the colour but rather the nature of the star.

User avatar #27 to #24 - shinigamigod (05/14/2012) [-]
All three statements.
A star is better used to describe a 5 pointed shape than it does a sun.
Not only that but it also describes a celebrity better than it does a sun.
We call them stars when we look at them at a distance however when we look at them individually we call them suns.
That is simply flawed logic.

It is not technically a dwarf because a dwarf means it would be out of proportion, it is better to use the term small to describe it as the requirements that would be a dwarf sun would be that parts of it wont be in proportion to the rest of it.

They're not white because white is a very specific colour that not only can we not confirm at such a large distance but would imply the entire body of it is white, which is simply incorrect, not to mention there are red dwarf suns and blue dwarf suns.

It is mostly about the proportions of it really, if the universes largest sun was to go into the dwarf state of its lifespan, it'd still be larger than our own sun, therefore using size as a unit of measurement when nearly none of them are similar enough for us to have a valid average is completely pointless.

It is just another one of the many scientific things they have simplified so that the common person could understand it.
I have never seen the need to simplify it, so I don't.

>A star is better used to describe a 5 pointed shape than it does a sun.

By that logic, a pentagon is a star. And so is everything else with 5 corners.

I'm not even going to bother with the rest of this comment. You're simply too self-righteous and retarded to reason with. But if I had to I would point out a few more flaws in your logic.

>a dwarf means it would be out of proportion

When dwarf is used to describe a person, then they would be disproportionate. Because they are small. You do not call conjoined twins "dwarf". Neither would you call someone with a disproportionate head a "dwarf". Dwarfism is a condition that makes you grow to a maximum height of around 4 ft. The reason the term dwarf is used with both the white dwarf stars and black dwarf stars is because they have shrunk down to the size of the earth because it is at the end of it's life span. Our sun (Note: Sun is just a name given to our own star that resides in the centre of our solar system. Nothing more.) will also become a white dwarf star in 4 billion years when it comes to the end of it's life. The after a few more billion years, it'll turn into a black dwarf.

They're white. Why is it white? Because a white dwarf is a dying star giving out an immense amount of light energy. It's so bright, that it is indeed, white. Once it stops giving out light energy, it'll turn into a black dwarf star and be completely dead.

The universes largest star would not go into a dwarf state. It would be a red super giant. And it would be huge. Bigger than a trillion of our own sun. Probably bigger. A star this size, when at the end of it's life, would either go supernova or turn into a black hole.

No, this is not simplified. You're stupid. You made this entire thing up. I should know. I'm taking a college course is all the sciences right now, as well as A-levels in physics. You're making the rest of us Brits look stupid.

Don't go pretending you know things that you don't have a damn clue about.

/rebuttal.

"A sun"

Hey guys! I saw a London today!
User avatar #128 to #115 - Crusader (05/14/2012) [-]
There is more than one sun.
The proper comparison to the sun would be if you are in an area situated around one town.
Let us use the parallel world of "The Walking Dead" the series on AMC.
In the first season they reference to Atlanta as The City, it is not the only city, but it is the only city that they can be talking about.
Our sun can be called The Sun, or A Sun, as it is our only sun, but one of millions of suns throughout the universe.
User avatar #114 to #27 - Crusader (05/14/2012) [-]
A sun is a star that is the center of a solar system and has planets that are in continuous orbit around it.
All suns are stars, but not all stars are suns.
You are thinking of a pentagram, which is used to symbolize stars because they are easy to draw.
It is considered a dwarf since the comparison between it and an "average" star (for which we use our sun, is much like the Earth compared to Jupiter, in which case we are dwarfed.
It is called a white dwarf because when you look at it, it is white. Yes there can be red and blue, green and even purple ones, but those are not white dwarf stars, white dwarf stars are only white. Like how only black people can be considered african-american, and not white people, as white people from Africa are called Afrikaners.

2.White is not refered to color, they are called white BECAUSE DEPENDING ON THE TEMPERATURE OF THE STAR THEY HAVE DIFFERENT COLORS,AND WHITE IS THE ******* HOTTEST,SO THEY ARE ******* WHITE,IF YOU ARE GOING TO SAY THEY ARE NOT WHITE THEN ANY SCIENTIST COULDNT KNOW ITS AVERAGE TEMPERATURE WITH ITS NAME.SO STFU
3.And third, STAR AND SUN ARE THE SAME WORD,POTATO POTATO,WHO CARES?,STOP BITCHING ABOUT IT DISGUSTING NERD

User avatar #37 to #34 - shinigamigod (05/14/2012) [-]
I never said that a Star was never used to describe that which we now know are suns.
I simply pointed out that it no longer accurate and its meaning is purely subjective and therefore is a null argument, meanings of words change, just because people are attached to the childhood concept of a star does not mean it is correct.

Your second point has no meaning in this discussion.
User avatar #40 to #37 - zwappes (05/14/2012) [-]

User avatar #43 to #40 - shinigamigod (05/14/2012) [-]
You mean because I choose not to use dumbed down language and look at detail much more finely than others I have no basic understanding of the universe?
The reason I am getting so much hate for my post is because my understanding is so much more in depth than theirs that they simply cannot comprehend that what they understand about it is a way to explain it to those who do not know how to understand it when explained to them in fine detail.
I mean look at Chemistry or Physics, almost everything you learn is wrong because the very fine detail of it is so complex that it is so hard to teach it to common people.
User avatar #61 to #43 - zwappes (05/14/2012) [-]

User avatar #64 to #61 - shinigamigod (05/14/2012) [-]
By common it generally means those who have not studied into it at the level in which the information becomes up to date.
And I make the assumption that they're 'common people' is because I am the only one who actually understands it and is correct in the matter.

Almost every single science does it.
Only once you study it at the highest levels do you actually get the accurate information.
