Im kinda depressed at how many comments are confused by the boxes. Like i really hope people are trolling because i dont see how it could not be the most obvious of them all. Its like a ridiculously more easy version of the puzzle I will include.


3 men go to a hotel and explain to the cashier that they would like to share one room, and need the cheapest room because they do not have much money.

The clerk provides them with a room for $30, but realized after they went to their room that the room fee is only $25, so the clerk sent the bellhop up to the room to give the men their money.

Since it was hard to give exact change, the bellhop asked if it was okay if he gave each of them $1 back and kept $2 for the tip. The men agreed.
Each man initiall paid $10, but got $1 back so they actually paid only $9.
$9 x 3 = $27 plus the $2 for the tip equals $29.
Where did the other dollar go?

In foresight of people being too retarded to get either. Your getting caught up in the money changing hands and arent just looking at the inflow outflow of cash. The boxes involve $40 and $30 meaning $70 that means at max each party leaves with an even split $35bucks but one guy only put in $20 one guy put in $50 meaning guy the first guy is always the net winner guy 2 always the net loser.

Your double counting money each man paid $9 bucks but thats 9 bucks including the tip so the questions phrasing is actually miss leading because of the order of how you count the money. Each man paid 1/3 of 25bucks + 1/3 of 2 dollars and was paid back 1 dollar you multiply it out for each man and you have (3/3x25)+(3/3x2)+(3x1)=30 no missing dollars.
