I am from montreal, where these protests are taking place. I just wanted to share a few things about why it's happening. These students are angry because the government wants to raise tuition by 1800 dollars over 5 years, bringing the grand total to attend university in Quebec at around 5000 a year, still a LOT lower than most of North America. These protests are ridiculous and have been going on for 11 weeks, causing tons of disruptions and violence, mainly from the students. THEY ARE ONLY PAYING FOR 17% OF THEIR WHAT IT ACTUALLY COSTS!!! Huge ass *********, Just wanted to explain a bit. Oh yeah, It's mainly french students protesting. Let me know what you think

Their tuition fees are increasing by 75% over 5 years.
That's a ******* big ask, 15% a year for 5 years.
Education should be free. You should not PAY to have the chance to get a good education and a good job.

I'm so sick and tired of this ****! I'm sick of those butthurt college students whining like little bitches. Plus, they expect the gouvernment to lower it, when they're wreaking havoc all over the province, and then they go: "HUURRR DUUURR POLICE BRUTALITYY HUURR". And the government offered to extend the raise over 7 years instead of 5 years. And don't forget how easy it is now to get a scholarship or a loan. What really annoys me though is that I'm at my last year of high school and this crazy protest may delay the start of my first year in CEGEP.
>MFW I see all the violence on the news everyday.

Being an American, I have to ask you. What in the world is CEGEP? Having asked that, I can now tell you that I agree with everything you just said! =)

Imagine you would have 2 more years between high school and university. It was created mainly to make ''post-high school'' studies easier to acess, if i remember well. We could say its a kind of ''introduction'' to college.

I thought that high school was to prepare you for college. But wow. I think that just might have made me cry a little inside if I had, had to face that. When I got out of high school I was rather keen on being nearly done with my education. Though I have to say I wasn't expecting my Associates to take me four years rather than two. At least I should be able to get my Bachelors in the normal two.

The protesters keep complaining that the police are being violent, yet, they create the violent circumstances. If you go protest you know there'll be trouble, so be ready to get beat up or simply don't protest. As for me, I just want to go back to college. I paid for this god damn useless semester.

I wouldn't say that you should expect to be beat up for protesting. Protests fill a vital role in a free society. What creates the violent situations is when the protesters refuse to obey the law. If the police offers tell you to do something that is within the law for them to force you to do, and you refuse.
THEN
you should expect to get your lawbreaking ass kicked.

It's well known that whenever there's a protest going on there will be people there to basically destroy everything. Violent situations are common while protesting. We've seen it enough lately, almost every single protest ends up with people being arrested. Simply said, you want to protest without risking anything? Then why the **** are you protesting in the first place?

The thing is though, if you do a protest the right way no one has to be arrested. You can do it peacefully and lawfully and get your point across without alienating anyone. I have MUCH more respect, and am MUCH more likely to support someone if they stay within the confines of the law when they protest. Protests aren't about breaking the law. The reason so many people break the law during protests, is because they are looking for trouble. Some of them may think that is the only effective way of changing things, but the majority of those that are out their breaking the law are only using the protest as an excuse. It is the same sort of thing, where you had looting during the aftermath of hurricane Katrina. Some of the looting was people who were stealing only what they needed to survive. Most of it however was people who were stealing things that they wanted, but could not afford. They saw an opportunity to take things they wanted without having to work for it, and that is disgusting immoral behavior. When there are no police in an area, as there were none in New Orleans will break the law because they can. In my mind, when you do that you are no better than an animal. And believe me, I know I got a little off of my point somewhere in this post, but as someone who knows that there are laws for a reason, and obeys those laws for that reason, it disgusts me when others don't.

5000 LOL.... that's pennies compared to what we pay every year to go to college. Jesus christ they don't know how lucky they are that it's only trying to be raised to 5k.
Try coming to America and going to college, see how upset they'll be then.

I live in the US, but I have a Canadian friend who told me about what's going on over there the other day. I was absolutely shocked and appalled. The cops are blatantly disregarding basic human rights, inciting riots, and doing their own thing. I watched a live stream of people protesting and cops blocking roadways. I would be scared and protesting too. There is more debt in the US from student loans, than anything else, and most people here are over their heads before they even hit 25. I was lucky enough to get scholarships, but most of my friends were not...so I understand the protests. Political gain is not worth national debt and tons of disgruntled people.

Your friend has no idea how ******* easy he has it. It isn't that they should pay more just because they can. It is that they should pay more because their education is worth more than they are paying. Should teachers get everything for free because the education that they provide should be free? Is a teacher's time worth nothing? If education were free the quality of that education would go through the floor. For $5,000 a year I could easily pay my own way through my entire degree with a part time job. I support your right to wish for a utopian world where everything is free and you don't have to work a day in your life. But I also support my own right to think that people need to grow up and learn how the world works.

Dude wtf are you responding to? I never said anything about the quality of their education, or about that education being free. I worked my ass off to get the scholarships that paid my way through school, and I now work three job, because I want to. I do not live in a utopian society and I know the value of hard work and education. I spoke of the police treatment, and of springing tuition fees on people who are used to paying a certain amount, and who will now have to try and figure out what to do about rising costs for their school. When was it ever an argument that the teachers were underpaid or undervalued, or that tuition should be free?
Red thumb all you want. But some of you guys just don't get it. What is a society without well educated citizens, and easily accessible education? No one should have to go into that much debt to better themselves. Education should be the last...and I mean very last...thing to be cut or withheld, when we as countries go into debt, because can't seem to get our act together.

- when the protests started, the government initially wanted to raise the costs by 75 % in one year. after 10 weaks of protests the government finally decided to listen to the students, but during the meeting they requested for the class to leave the table, so thats why they continued the protest. why should we accept to pay more just because we can? education should be a right that everyone has. if the price goes up, the accessibility to it will be restricted. students dont want to commit violence. not all of the violent protesters where students. you have to keep in mind that they are protesting now for 11 weaks and nobody hears them out.

I got my associates from Manchester Community College last year. I am starting at UNHM this fall. Had to take a term off in between to get the money together. I missed the merit scholarship by .2 on my GPA. But I am fine with that. I am working my way through college, and taking loans from my parents. Made my Dad laugh when I insisted on setting up a payment plan to start paying him back on what he paid for me right away. What did you go to UNH for?

Its "le Quebecois" or people from Quebec. Most of Canada despises them, because they whine and complaing about everything. For the longest time Quebec was in a deficit every year and got money from the rest of the Country, then when things started to turn around, they complained that they didnt want to help the other provinces that were struggling. Bascially, Quebecois complain about everything that does not go their way.

GEEZ guys! I only pay around $6000 a year for tuition at my university, which is a very, very acceptable number if you add up the costs of paying the professors, parking, and the supplies. I don't understand why or how a college can charge $30000+ a year on schooling, nor do I see a reason to pay that much. Even so, it is being raised because the cost to sustain the institutions are being raised.

Simple. Government is loaning out more money. Supply of money is increasing, so the colleges raise tuition.

Oh, I would love to pay $6000 lol I don't understand why it costs as much as it does either. However, I
can
understand the cost being in the 7 to 10 thousand range. With all the expenses that colleges have. think about taxes for land, and the cost of utilities, and maintenance, and wages. Hell I even understand them making a profit. What I can't understand is a college text book that costs $300. I haven't been able to work that one out yet. lol
