A flat-out racist comment like this on FJ with so many thumbs disappoints me.

The quote is wrong.
Darwin didn't say that.
It's from an old book by a KKK member.
There were African civilizations(countless, even.), and Africa is known for its oil and diamonds.
Oil couldn't have done much in those times.
Diamonds were dictated worth high value by whites.

I've lost faith in you guys, FJ.

Obviously not a darwin quote....but has anyone ever supposed that maybe people in africa didn't feel the need for these things? Maybe in some of the lush areas filled with food and water they didn't need to look for anything else? Or make things like houses and weaponry that would last? Maybe (for some) as nomads they didn't want or need to and maybe their style of living was better suited for the environment they lived in? Rather than constructing various things that would last for long periods and disrupt the local ecosystem.
So many people are concerned over artificial objects and concepts these days that they completely miss out on anything else to be gained from living. If you are happy where you live then why explore other places? If you have no need for currency then why make one. If all you see in diamonds is a shiny rock of no real practical value to your everyday life then why would you place value on it. I would say that only those unhappy with their lives or their predicaments would leave their homes or build things to change them.

People actually thumb this **** up. You morons do realize that the Romans and Greeks held the exact same views about the Germans and Celts, right? The balance between nations changes considerably over the ages. Sub-Saharan African nations like those of the Yoruba, Great Zimbabwe, Mali and Nubia were largely equal in terms of intellectual, economical and architectual development to much of Europe until the Renaissance, just like most of the rest of the world. Honestly, Africa is now going through its 'Dark Age'. The period of its own powerful native states and that of European rule are long behind it, and the entire continent has been a mess for the better part of the last century. That's because of fairly obvious reasons, not racist crap peddled by neckbeards on the Internet trying to be less of a failure.

Pic related, its the pyramids at Meroƫ in Sudan.

Here is the original quote:

"Education, sir, is the development of that which is. Since the dawn of history the negro has owned the continent of Africa--rich beyond the dream of poet's fancy, crunching acres of diamonds beneath his bare black feet. Yet he never picked one up from the dust until a white man showed to him its glittering light. His land swarmed with powerful and docile animals, yet he never dreamed a harness, cart, or sled. A hunter by necessity, he never made an axe, spear, or arrowhead worth preserving beyond the moment of its use. He lived as an ox, content to graze for an hour. In a land of stone and timber he never sawed a foot of lumber, carved a block, or built a house save of broken sticks and mud. With league on league of ocean strand and miles of inland seas, for four thousand years he watched their surface ripple under the wind, heard the thunder of the surf on his beach, the howl of the storm over his head, gazed on the dim blue horizon calling him to worlds that lie beyond, and yet he never dreamed a sail! He lived as his fathers lived--stole his food, worked his wife, sold his children, ate his brother, content to drink, sing, dance, and sport as the ape!

"And this creature, half child, half animal, the sport of impulse, whim, and conceit, 'pleased with a rattle, tickled with a straw,' a being who, left to his will, roams at night and sleeps in the day, whose speech knows no word of love, whose passions, once aroused, are as the fury of the tiger--they have set this thing to rule over the Southern people----"

These words came from the book "The Clansman: An Historical Romance of the Ku Klux Klan" written in 1905 by Thomas F. Dixon Jr.

Seeing a KKK-quot with so many thumbs on funnyjunk makes me think. I'm out of here.

User avatar #239 to #235 - thephantur (05/01/2012) [-]
The system they had, without change or advancement, is what led them to this. They never advanced past a primitive culture that was made up of thousands of warring tribes, constantly fighting and killing with reed shields and wooden spears. They were setting themselves up for destruction.
#253 to #239 - enialis (05/01/2012) [-]
But isn't that how we've lived for thousands of years? Isn't that change you say what is dooming not only our civilitzation, but the Earth? I'm not from greenpeace, or: omg, like, i'm totally anti-kony. I'm just saying they are different from us just like the tramp on the street we pass every morning by is different from us. He is a person, just like us, but he hadn't luck in life, perhaps he wasn't born in a well stablished family. But that's because our society is like this, the society we have created together. Some must have all the power while others with not much luck perish
User avatar #258 to #253 - thephantur (05/01/2012) [-]
Uh... no...

We've been constantly evolving at an exponential rate. It took millions of years to get to primitive man, hundreds of thousands more to reach the first recorded civilization, and just a few thousand to reach the pinnacle of the Roman Empire, only a few hundred to reach the medieval ages. We just keep advancing. Now, every year, look at the new technology we get. Our technology gets faster, more portable, our methods of food production can sustain billions, etc...

The African culture began like us, they started primitive and reached their first recorded civilization, a culture that was rich and powerful... but that's where they cut off.

While we went on to advance, they stayed there for no reason. Other cultures in similar climates went on to advance. The Egyptians, the Persians, etc...

The African culture, which, for a time, was great is now **** . Its been **** for thousands of years because it hasn't changed. There is no disagreement that they are people, but they were never down on their luck. They chose to not change, chose to keep their old warring ways.

Where other cultures fished by boat, they fished by net and foot. Where other cultures developed tools of iron and steel, they kept their tools of stone and rock.

Where other cultures developed a written language, looked to the stars to record the meaning of time, they didn't.

We adapt the environment to us, they adapt to the environment. And i think that's quite great, because when the time arrives that we can't even breath in our own city (well, it already happens in many chinese localities), we'll see who are the igonarants for mantaining their old habits.
And I also have to say that the conditions in which egyptians or persians developed, has nothing to do with most of Africa. The Nile, Tigris or Eufrates were extremely fertile lands
User avatar #300 to #284 - thephantur (05/01/2012) [-]
There are many civilizations that have lived in areas without fertile soil. Where there's a will, there's a way. The Persian and Egyptians had fertile areas, but, still, most of their landmass was made up of desert. How then could they sustain such a large area's worth of population based on a bit of fertile land? Irrigation, farming, domestication, etc...

As for seeing who's ignorant, good luck putting a foot on African soil without being killed. They might have air, but the very ground is stained with blood. AIDs, malaria, warlords, etc... Despite what you think, most of the air pollution is centralized near major cities, the country side is still. relativity, clean. Pollution is proportional to population. The fact that we have cities, centers of culture and advancement, is the reason for pollution. Africa has less because they have no civilized cities, all mud huts that beavers would be shamed to call their own.

AIDs was started because of their primitive lifestyles, how they refused to evolve past the bushman style of life, despite being in the 19th century.

Without Western culture, AIDs would be even more disastrous because there'd be noone to tell them what's killing them. Without Western culture, malaria would devastate them even more.

They bring nothing to brighten up humanities future, they haven't brought anything to the table for hundreds, if not, thousands of years.

User avatar #351 to #343 - thephantur (05/01/2012) [-]
Oops. Worded that completely wrong. What I was trying to say is that, no, our progress did nothing to hinder theirs. Before "Western" civilizations had started to influence their culture, they were already at a standstill, they had stopped progressing.

Now, what little progression they made was because of Western civilization. Not everything we've done to them has been good, but it doesn't negate the original point that African culture sucks.
#372 to #351 - enialis (05/01/2012) [-]
And I repeat that there aren't better or worse cultures, just different ways to live life.

And I think that yes, we inhibit their progress. We give them food, but we don't show them how to make a fertile land out of theirs, we give them water, but we don't show them how to build wells. Perhaps lately we have given them some resources to grow, but anyway I doubt that the leaders of our civilization ( and by leaders I mean the MNCs, not the politicians )would be interested in a growth just like ours, do you see the point? When people colonialized Africa they didn't want the best for natives, they wanted the best for their profits, slaughtering their chances of progression by paying bad salaries, avoiding taxes, violating human rights..

User avatar #409 to #406 - thephantur (05/01/2012) [-]
First off, if a culture doesn't do anything to benefit humanity it is useless.
I'm talking about a culture and not the individuals within. Never once have I said the people are useless, only the culture.
I'm studying to be a doctor so, yes, I am bringing something to the world.
The appendix has a use in terms of immunity, but we have almost no need for it anymore. That's why its at where it is. It used to be bigger, played a more important part of our system. Over time it was made useless.

Calling someone with a separate viewpoint on life ignorant/childish is very ignorant in itself. Notice how I never once insulted your viewpoints, only built on my point of view. If anything, you're acting like the child.

#44 to #28 - herecomesjohnny (05/01/2012) [-]
there is no genetic difference between the african man, the asian man and the caucasian one. The gap of development lies in the context of their growth, not in their DNA, but in their climate, geography, in biodiversity surrounding them. Culture, progress, the variety of achievements are but consequences of those starting factors.

For example, what Darwin didn't think of but modern sociology established was that agriculture is always much more developed in colder regions in which bountiful, tropical plants (such as the banana tree) won't grow.

You got scienced.

Did you really just say there is no genetic difference between any person, especially those of different races? Did you also just suggest that agriculture doesn't thrive in hot regions?

Anyway, we're having a discussion about awful cultures, and this is the worst ******* culture a person could imagine. These people are so stupid, that not only do they do nothing about the cespool they live in, but they make it worse on a daily basis. By now, they have to know that AIDS is rampant because of their nonstop ******* and that it's destroying them and that they live horribly every day because of it. They do absolutely nothing about it. In locations where technology and non-african cultures have been introduced, they are thriving and their living status vastly improves. If they're motivated to do it, they can accomplish great things like any other people, but it almost always takes outside pressure. While they might be perfectly fine in a jungle area because of the plant life, there are people who live in desert areas, and have done so for very long times. They still haven't figured out irrigation, and if their situation is awful, they do nothing about it. Am I supposed to think that kind of behavior isn't retarded?

User avatar #70 to #68 - herecomesjohnny (05/01/2012) [-]
okay. Let's take your example of AIDS. What's your plan in say, for a region like Zimbabwe in which 70% of the populations is seropositive?
Okay, you can say that not all of Africa is like that. So let's take for example Sierra Leone, a region with an average rate of the disease. What would be the solution?
User avatar #87 to #70 - gaikang (05/01/2012) [-]
My plan? For an area which has 70% of peoples who are HIV positive, I would say to help them. Give them support. Give them the proper tools and aid needed to fix their situation and educate them. Afterwords we record in history how not to perform, because a rate that high is a major **** up by the people who live there. As for Sierra Leone? They could probably use a bit more sexual education, but only 1.6% of the population is HIV positive so they should be fine in the long run. They have a government and are quite capable of sustaining themselves at this point. However do you know how they got that culture? The Sierra Leone Company came around and eventually the area became a British Colony. Not much of what establishment they have now is because of their own devices, and you're proving my point.
User avatar #96 to #87 - herecomesjohnny (05/01/2012) [-]
huh, sexual education, eh? A means that can't even work on its own in first world countries?

And not to mention sierra leone was under the rule of king leopold the third who taught dignitaries that if they had to survive, it wouldn't be on democracy but more on chopping arms....
User avatar #118 to #96 - gaikang (05/01/2012) [-]
Sorry for trying to propose a solution, and how does a BELGIAN king relate to a BRITISH colony? Especially when that king ruled 60 years after the British colony was officially established. Also, a Belgian king whom" fervently believed that overseas colonies were the key to a country's greatness." Honestly, I don't get what the **** you were getting at with that one.

Also, how does disaproving of sexual education and bringing up unrelated rulers help disprove my point that African culture is bad and that they mostly suck as a people?
User avatar #126 to #118 - gaikang (05/01/2012) [-]
Or maybe you mean Leopold I, who had even less to do with British colonies and ruled 30 years after Seirra Leone was established?
User avatar #125 to #118 - herecomesjohnny (05/01/2012) [-]
excuse me for stating facts and for explaining that most brutish customs employed throughout equatorial Africa was passed on by Westerns.

And i'm sorry if you just hope that AIDS will just die out in a region without condoms or without hyegenic blood protocols. But yeah, the dutch would be so much better in their position.
User avatar #134 to #125 - gaikang (05/01/2012) [-]
When did I say that we shouldn't do those things? Sex ed was the first and only thing to come to mind, because we aren't ******* debating the best solution to AIDS. There are plenty of better and different ways to go about solving AIDS, but that isn't what I'm arguing.

Also, as I said in another post, all cultures have bad point and good point, and there are cultures with more good point and those with more bad points. I assure you, western culture is now perfect, but it is damn well better than the current African culture of "Sure is a lot of hunger and AIDS. Guess I'm going to spend a day or two making a ****** hut and do nothing about it unless someone else makes me do something, or fixes it for me." Now are you going to try and disprove my point that African cultures suck, or can I go comment somewhere else?
User avatar #142 to #134 - herecomesjohnny (05/01/2012) [-]
do whatever you want, man, but know this: without detection, you can go for up to twelve years without knowing you're seropositive. And about the other solutions i talked about, they weren't propositions, they were irony. No way these countries are developed to take these measures.

I'm not trying to redeem african culture, i'm just saying it's not the culture that caught them in this vicious cycle, it's the historical events and circumstances that trapped them like this.
User avatar #158 to #142 - gaikang (05/01/2012) [-]
And I'm saying that they don't do anything to change their situation or solve their own problems, because they never have, and never will, because their culture sucks. It's not just recent situations either. As said, they do nothing permanent. They always live in the short term. Even when living in the jungle, they may not have needed farming, but they still built ****** huts. Conceivably logical though, because they're so ****** that they could be replaced easily if anything happened or they got damaged. But why did they do that? Why didn't they go for more than that, and develop technologically like Asian and Western cultures? Why do they so rarely invest in the permanent? Why did all the world change around them, while they kept doing the same thing, never innovating, never changing, for countless millennium? How can you go for so long, and never evolve or change?
User avatar #167 to #158 - herecomesjohnny (05/01/2012) [-]
