In Vietnam. people are born there, live there, and die there without ever setting foot on dry land

would need the machines to turn salt water into fresh water though

tsunami?
User avatar #84 to #74 - trostell (04/27/2012) [-]
Tsunamis don't break unless they hit land. If they don't break, they can't cause damage, because they're not rising up above the natural level of the water. Since the town is floating in the water, tsunamis wouldn't affect it.
User avatar #85 to #84 - rototornik (04/27/2012) [-]
if you say so. but still, and enormous wave would affect it greatly.
User avatar #87 to #85 - trostell (04/27/2012) [-]
You don't understand, out in the ocean TSUNAMIS DON'T CAUSE WAVES. They don't breach the surface until the land rises up below them, forcing the water upwards.
User avatar #116 to #87 - HarvietheDinkle (04/27/2012) [-]
but the swells can greatly "tilt" a town like this
User avatar #134 to #116 - trostell (04/28/2012) [-]
See those rocks, sticking up around the town? They break up swells. And, even more importantly, there's already measures to keep land-based buildings like houses to keep from tilting and shaking themselves apart during earthquakes, which could be adapted to these aquatic cities.
#135 to #134 - HarvietheDinkle (04/28/2012) [-]
A nice dose of physics and reality into a show that has dragons, electric mice, and ghosts. Who knows - those "rocks" could be cardboard for all you know (and thus not stop the swells), and the town made of paper mache.

I guess my ultimate point is that it's not such a big deal in a game.
#136 to #135 - trostell (04/28/2012) [-]
I was trying to explain that this idea is possible, perhaps even PRACTICAL, considering the way society is going. I would love to gather up my friends, ship off to a floating city populated by other tolerant, intelligent people, and ignore the idiots for the rest of my life. I have no clue how what you just said relates to debating the practicality of living in a floating city.
#137 to #136 - HarvietheDinkle (04/28/2012) [-]
No, I got that - I guess we're going two different ways.
I just wanted to point out the fact that it's a pokemon game, so that's not much to debate about. You wanted to point out the fact that it might be better and feasible to live the there - a different topic.

Btw, from what I've noticed, it's not that there are more idiots than ever - it's just that it's the idiots who are more outspoken - they don't know when to not speak haha. It's been like that forever.

LARGE WAVES, forget tsunamis.
User avatar #97 to #96 - trostell (04/27/2012) [-]
Pacifidlog Town is relatively sheltered from storms due to being in the middle of the ocean, and the little rocky spires sticking out of the ground will break up large waves. A few preventative measures can protect the town from the worst things.
User avatar #113 to #97 - rototornik (04/27/2012) [-]
i was speaking of theoretical cities that humans would make in case of sea level risings.
but there are such calm places, and they arent so rare, but life would be more dangerous than ever.

Saying its his solution is just implying that that's what he would do. He never claimed the town to be his personal achievement.
