"When the Christmas bells sounded in the villages of the Vosges behind the lines ..... something fantastically unmilitary occurred. German and French troops spontaneously made peace and ceased hostilities; they visited each other through disused trench tunnels, and exchanged wine, cognac and cigarettes for Westphalian black bread, biscuits and ham. This suited them so well that they remained good friends even after Christmas was over." -Richard Schirrmann

I'm sorry for what they tried to do to you. This post wasn't literally saying 'go drop your weapons so you can play ping-pong'. It's just an idea that if we all felt empathy for one another, we can resolve our problems without violence towards each other. Knowing the cynicism held by both sides with good reason, we can only dream of a day like the one featured in the post.

I can't claim any experience over war and its horrors. I can only view the after effects. But, what I think this comic is trying to say is that the soldiers represent nations, vying for control rather than individuals. I believe it's trying to state that instead of all this fighting, nations could solve their problems without bloodshed, if we understood what war does to everyone.

I'm a retired vet and i understand your situation. I am friendly to everyone, but you point a gun at me, then you are fair game to me. Besides, we asked them to turn in terrorist for their crime against humanity, they said they can't. They said we can't touch them because the current government is scared of them. So we came in to secure it for them. I almost died trying to keep these people over seas and not on home soil.

Some civilians fail to understand that we 'invaded' them to keep the terrorist tied up on their home soil. Instead of fighting them on ours. they wouldn't be preaching peace and all that if it was on our home turf and people were getting killed everyday in front of them for a stupid cause of some religious/power hungry nutcases. True, we have people die every day, but nothing as bad as in a war torn country.

Just stay strong and keep at it. Know this. Better over there, then here at home.

Hussein killed thousands, ill say again thousands, that we know of, actually that i know of, its probably much higher than what i know, and much higher than the official body count, more than the US has killed in both Afghanistan and Iraq combined from what i have heard, so again, which makes more sense, taking military action against a genocidal megalomaniac does make perfect sense, especially when said madman was breaking international laws repeatedly. you can make an argument for any side, it comes down to opinion, when you argue with an educated and intelligent American, and yes i know there are so very few like that, you are most likely going to lose because said American has those educated qualities mixed with a huge sense of patriotism ingrained from birth

I wouldn't use the educated american argument as a guaranteed win. I am an american, very well educated, member of the international honor society, graduated with honors, and am working on two more separate degrees. I also was not arguing about Hussein. You focused on Hussein, I am arguing the Taliban. Also it is not our job to fix the rest of the world when we have plenty to fix right here at home.

I agree, but it is our job to police the world, Monroe Doctrine. Let those who protest war worry about whats happening here, so many people personally hate soldiers, men and women like me that they grew up with, and throw things at us and call us murderers, take an active stance against us, and then say "oh so sad" when they see some gang shooting killed a kid on the news. People on the home front need to worry about the home front and let us fight the war.

I don't hate soldiers at all. They are all very brave individuals just doing their job. I don't support the people SENDING them there when they don't need to be put in harm's way. But no, it is not OUR job to police the world. We just like to think the world can't run or fix itself without us getting involved in everything. Right now they need to get our troops home, because there is no reason for them to be over there.

Examples of the world fixing itself. Rwanda- Genocide- Between 500,000 and 1 million dead. Darfur- Genocide 2-4 million dead. Cambodia- Genocide conducted by Pol Pot - Unknown body count, suspected millions. Sri Lanka- 03 - genocide - 20,000 dead. You like the way the world fixes itself? Afghanistan - War Zone - approximately 15,000 civilian casualties, including wounded which is around 13,360 - US military casualties approximately 18,000 including deaths which is around 1,827. Iraq - US Casualties - approx 37,000, out of that 32,000 dead approx. Dead civilians, approximately 8,000, insurgents/OpFor dead approx 27,000. Saddam Hussein, over a ten year period killed 600,000 people, not counting his countrymen which is about 7-800,000 Iraqis just from executions and weapons testing and another 2-400,000 killed as a result of violent treatments in prison adding on another 200,000 for human testing in prisons, these are numbers i have found in several different sources, now i don't know about you, but id rather have us kicking in doors and getting a bad rap for about 8,000 casualties than someone killing their own people and no one cares that their kill count is about 1.5 million

this war isnt about one country. There are religious extremists all throughout the middle east, and they have worked together to target my country. Lets look at a map for a minute and see what kind of threat is present in the middle east right now. This is Iran, a nuclear power. Coalition forces have set up stable governments on either side of Iran to deter military action and to grant a staging ground for future war.

So what, I was a Marine, I went through a hell of a lot too, not everyone of them is the same. My unit was sent to the Korengal to do some intel work for MARSOC. Yeah its true we were ambushed, but never have I seen such an act of bravery as by some of the locals who were well known to the Taliban fighters, meaning they knew them personally. A few men and even a woman came to where Taliban fighters had fallen, took their assault rifles, and as the Taliban cheered for them to aid in killing us, those cheers turned to screams as 7.62 ammo ripped into them from the locals. They saved our lives and then actually THANKED US! Don't be a generalizing prick that gives the rest of us a bad name.

But from the perspective of the picture, a soldier and an insurgent point weapons at each other. My training has told me to shoot anyone that points a weapon at me. Im not taking the chance that this man wont shoot me.
