Actually, the Colosseum hosted many different forms of entertainment. Some were prisoners and criminals who were tossed in without arms/armour or simple equipment and forced to fight exotic animals and trained gladiators.

Gladiators are something different. Many were slaves, former soldiers, prisoners, etc... but were bought by the Gladiator schools and taught how to fight. They had a wide range of weapons available from gladius and tower shield to trident and net. They were pitted against each other and could gain great prestige from it and, then, buy their freedom... though it usually ended badly since, you know, a life of killing for sport and then put out into public where you're a nobody again... yeah doesn't work out.

Anyway, the former died horribly, the latter, were trained and fought until death or their freedom was bought.

What if he actually ended up using his surroundings better and was more aware of what was going on in the arena? The gladiators did have to deal with traps, animals, etc...
