Just Ctrl-F-ed a copy of the King James' Bible, the word afraid apears 179 times, and the phrase 'Don't be afraid' or 'do no be afraid' apears 0 times.

The original Bible was not in English, so it has been translated for us. The various translation methods (word-for-word, sentence-for-sentence, or ideas), as well as the date of the translation make up the different versions.
Some popular ones include;
KJV/NKJV - King James Version / New King James Version
NIV - New International Version
NLT - New Living Translation
ASB - American Standard Bible
MSG - The Message Translation
User avatar #214 to #210 - danniegurl (04/17/2012) [-]
there are just different translations and some versions are updated every so often to keep them in modern english so you can actually understand them

User avatar #34 to #33 - gaikang (04/16/2012) [-]
I was just making a Scumbag God joke, but "the fear of the Lord is described as the "discipline" or "instruction" of wisdom. The Catholic Encyclopedia explains that this gift "fills us with a sovereign respect for God, and makes us dread, above all things, to offend Him."
User avatar #37 to #34 - fappingmyflamingo (04/16/2012) [-]
yeah I know. But its not SUPPOSED to make us fear God. Its the same as not wanting to make your dad upset... Well, except Gods not your dad.

User avatar #207 to #37 - mikejj (04/17/2012) [-]
yeah i feel like people who are scared of God are kinda missing the point (at least in Christianity). if you only act a certain way because you fear going to Hell, you're doing it for the wrong reasons. but then again, who am i to call out any one trying to be a good person?

I think most people who have a really deep connection with God would say that they act a certain way because of the fact that God loved them so much, that He died on the cross for them. In other words, imagine if your best friend did a really big favor for you, and he asked some thing very small from you in return. You'd want to pay him back for that favor wouldn't you?, especially considering how little he's asking from you. And not only that, even when you do a ****** job returning the favor, or you take a really long time to do it, he's still your best friend. I would want to pay him back not because I fear he wouldn't like me if I didn't, but because that's the right thing to do. That's the way I look at it anyways.

Oh boy, a bunch of ignorant teenage kids arguing about world issues.

Religion does not promote fear. It promotes faith and good doing. Although many such as Christianity establishes a "hell & heaven", it is simply making it clear that there is punishment for wrong doing. Our legal system isn't in place to keep you hiding in fear. However, it is there to remind you that unlawful actions will be punished.

Religion has been used by those who are corrupt. However, if you can name me one entity which hasn't been used to harm something else, then I would be more than happy.

#221 to #212 - iamphoenix (04/17/2012) [-]
The church as a governing body manifestly does not necessarily represent the will of God or the original intention of Christianity. The faith teaches selflessness, compassion towards others, humility, good for the sake of good and love for all that is good.

She is a very happy and healthy individual, who can go on living just fine. But she would rather die (despite the good life she has) because her religion tells her she will go to a better place. Books were written and compiled long before 6000 years ago. A bunch of politicians probably got together one evening, looked at each other and one of them said, "Hey, I've got another great idea about how to control people!" Logic and reasoning? **** THAT! Umm... because my science textbook is based on scientific analysis and facts and not lies and simple belief? Also, to answer you, one fact that the big bang theory was real is that Edwin Hubble discovered that the universe is expanding. Which means it must've come from nothing. I can say this is fact because he existed. There are documents and photos of Edwin Hubble. He was a scientist. This was in like, 1929.
#50 to #42 - rockduhhouse (04/16/2012) [-]
Your science textbook is made off of scientific conclusions. Regarding anything you read in science as a fact is the same as what you have just recently mocked Christians for doing; accepting anything in a book as fact.

Science once thought evolution could not happen. It's only over the last few hundred years that the theory was even considered as a hypothesis.
#56 to #50 - rockduhhouse (04/16/2012) [-]
I'm going to make a correction so I don't get red-thumb raped:

User avatar #122 to #113 - runtz (04/16/2012) [-]
Well I do like your positive point of view on the subject, but if I may ask a question, the one that is most frequently asked. God says he loves us, but why is there people born with bad intentions, in bad homes, etc...? And please don't say it was their choice to make because according to God everything is written already. That being said what is the reason we have to suffer and actually prove ourselves? He could make everything good, he IS God right? Or are we just some kind of sick entertainment for him?
#148 to #122 - rockduhhouse (04/16/2012) [-]
Well, first I'll point out that nobody is born with intentions at all, let alone bad ones. Now, I have some confusions about the rest myself. Some like to think that the bad conditions are God's way of pulling them to Himself, but I don't agree with that. Others say that this is punishment to people's ancestors' sins. I don't even know what to think about that one. Some just think that's there to have the word of God spread, because statistically, there are more Christians per population in countries like that.

I don't think we're some sick entertainment for him, though. I mean, if everything's already written out, then isn't it a bit pointless to have us running around to just entertain him?
User avatar #152 to #148 - runtz (04/16/2012) [-]

I see what you mean. But when I read a logical, scientific book or any such text, I take the time to consider all those things.
#146 to #138 - rockduhhouse (04/16/2012) [-]
Then you have made your own conclusion, and you know what you believe. I support people who take time to do this, no matter what their views are in the end. You are the type of people I wish existed instead of all those ignorant masses, Atheist and religious alike.

Thanks, man. What you just said has made my evening. BTW just curious, how old do you guys think I am?
#153 to #149 - rockduhhouse (04/16/2012) [-]
Not sure. I don't judge people's ages through the internet. I've found that 12-year-olds can seem like well-educated college graduates, and vice-versa.

Cool. I'm 15.

Just because the guy you are arguing with doesn't have all the facts doesn't mean they aren't true. Science is fact. If a scientist says something to be a fact, and if he is proven wrong by his colleagues, then he is shameful to continue spreading it. Science is conclusion from OBSERVATION. The Bible may draw conclusions based on the origin of the universe, but there is nothing to back it up.

And this is in regards to your post above: Evolution is not a wish-washy "hypothesis." The term 'theory' of evolution does not mean a "Hey, this might have happened, but its just a theory." Evolution is indeed a fact. People at one point rejected the notion for two reasons. 1) Religion clouded their heads. 2) They didn't have enough technology to find the right evidence. Today we have tons of evidence.

Since you responded to me here, I will respond here as well.

Science has not undergone the long process to be considered "fact." In addition, "fact" is not a part of the scientific method. Here is the scientific method:
First, there is the hypothesis stage. The stage in which the original thought is created. This is usually formed by the question, "why?"
Next, the Theory stage. This section describes something that has much scientific data, but still has some flaws and/or unanswered questions. As far as I see it, both evolution and religion fit here.
Then, finally, after usually over 50 years, it is considered a scientific law. Once something is put here people often classify it as fact. Any scientist will know, however, to never confuse it as a "fact." Things such as the Earth being flat, the sun orbiting the Earth, and the thought that animals could not adapt were once considered scientific laws, and have all been disproved.

Now, we will go on to the next myth; religion has no scientific evidence. This is false. There are plenty of scientists from Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, and other faiths and religions gathering evidence for their beliefs. There is plenty of evidence for various religions. Not even atheist scientists deny that.

I'm Christian, but I don't care what you believe. You need to stop trolling the **** out of this site. Who cares what people believe in?

Actually, you don't care what we believe because you're Christian.
User avatar #156 to #124 - xboxperks (04/16/2012) [-]
You're taking what I said out of context. I meant it that I don't care what you believe in, just don't throw it in my face that you don't believe in what I believe in. Hence my last sentence. Don't let your ignorance bring you down.

Christian heaven is ******** . You enter not upon merit in your life. Someone who has a deathbed conversion but was a horrible person and a criminal will get into heaven whereas an Atheist who committed great deeds of good and charity wouldn't. God is envious. Thou shalt worship no other god. If he really was god he wouldn't care that much whether people worshipped him or not, but if they survived. The fact that he wants to be worshipped and have buildings for him shows a that he might have a little ego problem.
User avatar #145 to #131 - filthyargonian (04/16/2012) [-]
I'm catholic and i believe that everybody will get into heaven (if heaven exists), as long as they are a good person. atheists would get in in my mind. Now if you look at hardcore non-christian Christians like the westboro baptist church, they can go **** themselves.
User avatar #222 to #145 - Chuckaholic (04/17/2012) [-]
That is what heaven should be like however the "christian" heaven in the bible and more conservative christians is outdated I'd say. You're Idea of heaven is exactly what it should be. I don't really believe in heaven, but I don't really care. I just live my life for this one, not the next. I am good however because I'm not a prick and to a certain extent believe in Karma.
