Common Misconception, in fact: The idea of hell was far before Jesus was born, originally it was called 'Hades', originating from a town that was always being raided, constantly on fire, murders taking place every day, fighting in the streets (pretty much modern day Harlem, NY).

"Hell" could be just a simplification on "Hades' underworld", in favour of some dumb (mostly merican) citizens of the world, who wouldn't know **** about greek mythology.
