What would happen ifl drilled a
tunnel through the center of the
Earth and jumped into it?
Although it would be impossible to do this on
earth, you actually could do this on the moon.
The moon has a cold core and it also doesn' t
have any oceans or groundwater to mess things
up. In addition, the moon has no atmosphere, so
the tunnel would have a nice vacuum in it that
eliminates aerodynamic drag.
So, imagine that the tunnel through the moon is
20 feet (7 meters) in diameter. Down one side is a
ladder. If you were to climb down the ladder, what
you would find is that your weight decreases,
Gravity is caused by objects attracting one
another with their mass. As you descend into the
tunnel, more and more of the moon' s mass is
above you, so it attracts you upward. (Once you
climbed down to the center of the moon you
would be weightless. The mass of the moon is all
around you and attracting you equally, so it all
cancels out and you would feel weightless.
If you were to actually leap into the tunnel and
allow yourself to fall, you would accelerate toward
the center to a very high speed. Then you would
zoom through the center and start decelerating.
You would eventually stop when you reached the
tunnel' s lip on the other side of the moon, and
then you would start falling back down the tunnel
in the other direction, You would oscillate back
and forth like this forever.
If you could do this on earth, one amazing effect
would be the ease of travel. The diameter of the
earth is about 12, 700 kilometers (7, 800 miles), If
you drilled the tunnel straight through the center
and could create a vacuum inside, anything you
dropped into the tunnel would reach the other
side of the planet in just 42 minutes!

lol imagine thousands of years in the future people come to the moon to explore and just find this random hole with a dead body just flying up and back down

>Drill hole through Earth

surely the molten iron core of the earth would not flow out of the earth's centre due to gravity
#533 to #51 - remsaman (03/24/2012) [-]
false.

the core of the earth is solid iron, not liquid, due to the pressure.
User avatar #735 to #533 - Greatangelsfury (03/25/2012) [-]
no, its a liquid, CAUSE IT'S ****** HOT DOWN THERE!!!
User avatar #736 to #735 - remsaman (03/25/2012) [-]
WELL OF COURSE its ******* hot down there
but metals solidify at pressure as well as temperature.

"Seismic measurements show that the core is divided into two parts, a solid inner core with a radius of ~1,220 km[2] and a liquid outer core extending beyond it to a radius of ~3,400 km. The solid inner core was discovered in 1936 by Inge Lehmann and is generally believed to be composed primarily of iron and some nickel. "

"The melting point and viscosity of a substance depends on the pressure it is under. "

User avatar #739 to #738 - Greatangelsfury (03/25/2012) [-]
either way, i don't care if the core is liquid or solid, that **** is hot

just like your mother

Yeah i guess it is hot.

ever watched the movie "the core"?

if u use that movie as a source of nfomation, i'll start flipping tables

No im just pulling it out because its somewhat relevant to the topic.
i did two semesters of geology.

im not using a movie as a source of information.
User avatar #666 to #51 - jinjo (03/24/2012) [-]
I was thinking the same thing, you'd **** up the mass, and distribution of it at least which would **** up everything.

Also as far as I know we haven't exacty dug many holes into the moon, how can we be sure we know what it in it below like 200 feet?
#61 to #51 - faldrok (03/24/2012) [-]
Destabalising our haematite core would first result in the loss of our planet's natural shield against solar radiation, the increased radiation levels would fry our asses before the other effects would.

If there would be no friction/resistance whatever, you wouldnt end up in the middle, as he said vacuum. So that means he, as he said in the post would just go up and down forever..

Except that in reality, the moon has a very small atmosphere containing Helium.

What if we drill all inside the moon, with like 200 holes covering the surface and dig out a ton of the substances.... and fill it with cheese! when the cheese solidifies, we replace more dirt with cheese until we can tell our children the Moon really is made of CHEESE!

Still couldn't happen unfortunately, the immense pressure that causes the moon to stay in a spherical shape would cause the tunnel to collapse.

Mine shafts collapse all the time. And they are under much less pressure than the described tunnel would be under. The tunnel you speak of would have to hold the weight of the entire moon to keep from collapsing. There is not a single material that could do that.
