wow that sure is funny. I liked the part where there was nothing but a quote and nothing funny at all.

that part was the funniest.

You can't explain that!

Only on FJ could they take a post that has nothing to do with religion and turn it into a ********* . Yes, Richard Dawkins is a staunch atheist and despises organized religion. But this quote was from him as a scientist.
User avatar #296 to #280 - mtandy (03/22/2012) [-]
Well, yes, but there is a slight subtext there considering who it comes from.
#306 to #296 - iamphoenix (03/22/2012) [-]
Richard Dawkins is hardly the type of person to put his anti-religious views in subtext. He hates religion and superstition to the point of calling it a blight on the world. His attitude on it and the way he expresses it seem hardly that of a scientist to me, but he's forthright with it at every opportunity.
User avatar #384 to #306 - Tunaa (03/22/2012) [-]
Sadly organized religion has become a blight. It stops people from advancing humanity because of peoples blind convictions that they HAVE to follow god or burn. They don't question this so they are unlikely to question other things in life that would be suspicious to those with an open mind. Some religious people do have a open mind and can be respected its just the millions blind fools who never open their eyes. It is those people who brings us all down.
#387 to #384 - iamphoenix (03/22/2012) [-]
Those people would be blind without religion. There have been plenty of great thinkers who were Christians. Religion does not necessarily exclude intelligence or preclude morality.
User avatar #391 to #387 - Tunaa (03/22/2012) [-]
That is true and I said just that. Unfortunately religion has become about fear and little else. This causes the masses to flock. The more time that passes the less chance a religion will offer an intellectual to the world.
#414 to #391 - iamphoenix (03/22/2012) [-]
I think that is entirely dependent on the choices the churches make. Some will try their best to cling to old values and views of the Bible - fundamentalism, young earth creationism, etc. Rather than adapting our understanding of the meaning of the text based on fact, they seek to adapt their understanding of fact to fit their original interpretation. Christianity at its core - a faith that places compassion, self-sacrifice, humility and kindness above all else - is not a faith that needs to limit our intelligence or our progress. The teachings described in the Bible are not meant for a society as a whole, but are a way to guide the behavior of the individual. When we start treating the Bible as an excuse to limit the freedoms of others and excuse our own misguided ignorance and hatred, then it becomes an issue.
User avatar #313 to #306 - mtandy (03/22/2012) [-]
Good point. Don't suppose you know where this quote is from? Would like to know the context of it. I'm prepared to be wrong, but being Dawkins, I do have my suspicions.
#317 to #313 - iamphoenix (03/22/2012) [-]
It could be from anywhere. He makes it a point to let people know how much he hates organized religion as oft as he can.
#298 to #296 - anon (03/22/2012) [-]
I don't see any religions talking about broom sticks and magic carpets.
#361 to #298 - cathaleatsbabies (03/22/2012) [-]
It does talk about an invisible man in the sky who created the world in 7 days. His son turns water into wine and respawns in 3 days. Broomsticks are about as believable.
User avatar #309 to #298 - mtandy (03/22/2012) [-]
Never said I did, but you cannot deny that a good deal of religious "stories", for want of a better word, are fantastical.
#126 - anon (03/22/2012) [-]
>Take any quote said by a celebrity bashing something the majority of funnyjunkers dislike
>Half-ass paste it on top of a semi-related picture
>For the love of god DO NOT include any type of punch line
