Orthostatic Hyoptension.

I have it, many people do.

Your blood pressure drops instead of going up when you stand up.

Eat more salt in your diet, it helps.

Everybody's BP goes down for a split second or two (but only by a little bit). However in people with orthostatic/postural hypotension the BP drops more than normal.

This can be due to several factors. One of them is if you naturally have low BP. But more commonly it's due to either dehydration or if you have been lying down for a long period and your body has become accustomed to a lowered BP. The best thing to do is keep well hydrated and get up slowly if you have been lying down for too long (eg. sit up for a few seconds first and then stand).

I wouldn't go increasing salt in your diet on the back of one episode. Too much salt can lead to chronic high BP which is bad for your heart and blood vessels.

Hi brahs! Some useful medical info here, so lets-a-go!
Fact:That light-headedness is caused when you get up too fast off of a sofa or floor. This is because of discombobulation. Very simply, just get off the sofa slower. :D hope this helped

No it is due to postural hypotension. Discombobulation is a symptom not a cause. However your advice of getting up from the sofa slower is correct.

When you stand up quickly gravity pulls blood from your brain towards your feet and blood doesn't return to the brain until the next heart beat. With a slow pulse, this takes a second or two and that is enough time to feel the lack of oxygen in the symptom of lightheadedness or dizziness.
User avatar #7 to #3 - bobbykins (02/15/2012) [-]
...We have slow pulses?.....is that bad?
#9 to #7 - dreigamos (02/15/2012) [-]
Merely a result of the fact that you have for the most part been sitting or lying down so you are not exerting yourself so your heart relaxes as there is less need for blood to go around the body.

I went to a heart doctor for this problem and he told me that it's because we have low blood pressure so when we get up our capilaries can't constrict our blood flow to send it to the brain and that's why our heads go blank because there is no blood going to the head

woah thanks for explaining..... i get this so bad i faint once in awhile but havnt decided to go check it out yet :/

im guessing he just reccomended you to get up slower?
#312 to #309 - camdiddy (02/16/2012) [-]
yeah, he said you'll go out of it but for now just get up slower

it mostly happens to boys going through puberty, and because we have very large growth spurts our bodies can't keep up with our bone and muscle growth

This is normal, especially in teenagers.
You see, when you stand up suddenly, your blood pressure drops. This can cause tunnel vision and in some cases, fainting.

Protip: If you DON'T want to fall down three flights of stairs in this state, simply take a knee and re-tie your shoes.
