Tan is the shortened version of the term Tangent, which is a trigonometrical equation. That is how it would be graphed. It's a relatively simple concept, but one you don't learn prior to Trig.

its actually a trigonometry function( f(x)=tan(x)), if you have a graphing calculator type in tan then press x, it will show the same graph.
