TO CLARIFY: The purpose of letting the site go dark would be to give people the opportunity to let them write their congressmen and women and senators to protest this legislation. SOPA will give the federal government the authority to censor websites like this one if any copyrighted material is posted. This blackout would just be a taste of what is to come if the legislation passes.

TL;DR: The blackout might be permanent if SOPA passes

You would redirect all queries to the site to stop SOPA sites and have them submit petitions to their congressmen and senators. Even if people didn't see this post, they would still get the message.

How would shutting down a site for a few hours redirect you to the site and do you honestly think they give a **** about a petition? Obama said he was going to veto it anyways.

But if it does magically pass there will be a **** storm of unimaginable proportion and it would get rescind.

Plus, if SOPA passes, it would give the federal government authority to censor sites like this one if any copyrighted material were posted. Any music or copyrighted images would be subject to censorship

we are going to protest censorship of the internet by removing the internet from ourselves? That's a bit like giving a thief your money so he doesn't steal it.

The idea is to get people's attention and make them aware of the problem
