It was the Finnish version of the Mosin-Nagant. The Russian one is 7.62X54r, the Finnish is chambered in 7.62X53R. The White Death = BOSS.

Fun fact, Simo Hayha did not use a scope, for fear that the russian counter snipers sent after him would see the scope glare.

Precisely. He started out sniping soviet patrols. When they heard about The White Death (as the Soviets knew him) they sent counter snipers after him. They died. He eventually took an explosive round to the head, and was taken to a field hospital. He survived, but he was done sniping reds (probably too boring by then.)

Mozart was one of the greatest prodigies I know of. He created one of his first songs at the age of 4(or 5, he was pretty young), his first symphony at age 12, I would've loved to meet him. Even though he wrote 600 songs, it's still sad that he died at the age of 35.

Oh btw, Simo did it... with NO scope. He was alerted to the position of quite a few Russian counter-snipers by the glint of their scopes, so chose not to use one. He also survived I think two artillery shellings of the forest he did his sniping in. Also he got over 200 more confirmed kills with s submachine gun, and he was only part of the Finnish voluntary militia I believe. He just decided one day to pick up his hinting rifle and fight back the invading Russians all on his lonesome. And the best part is when a Russian finally managed to shoot him, he shot him at close range in the face with a shotgun. Some other Fins found him still alive in the forest and dragged him out. He woke up three days later.
#503 to #470 - whitebishop (01/12/2012) [-]
Did his hinting rifle fire acid-tipped hints?
E.g. "Those Russian trousers make you look fat" The soldier would run away crying and never fight again, thus giving Simo a "confirmed kill". Russians like their trousers :)

You're comparing some guy who killed 2 people with one bullet against a person who killed 505 people in his lifetime.

Stop comparing apples and oranges.
User avatar #495 to #111 - themuffinmanman (01/12/2012) [-]
This guy kicked serious ass. By himself in 20 to 40 degrees below zero in 6 feet of snow he killed about 705 people. All he had was a couple cans of food. Teams of counter snipers couldn't take him out. Carpet bombing could only tear up his coat. Him getting shot in the face by an exploding bullet was the only thing that could stop him, and that was only temporarily because he got up after that happened to him. All he had was an smg and a mosin nagant with no scope on it, and basic military training. He is know as he who has kicked so much ass his ass kickery will not be questioned.

Was gonna say the same thing, they're two different things entirely. That one doesn't even look like it was made by the makers of the other good ones. Both were badass.

But UNF the White Death.

Not lifetime. He killed 505 people in 100 days.

During the Winter War (1939–1940), between Finland and the Soviet Union, he began his duty as a sniper and fought for the Finnish Army against the Red Army. In temperatures between −40 and −20 degrees Celsius, dressed completely in white camouflage, Häyhä was credited with 505 confirmed kills of Soviet soldiers.[2][4] A daily account of the kills at Kollaa was conducted for the Finnish snipers. Besides his sniper kills, Häyhä was also credited with over 200 kills with a Suomi KP/-31 submachine gun.[4] Remarkably, all of Häyhä's kills were accomplished in fewer than 100 days at a time of year with very short hours of daylight.[5][6][7]

User avatar #487 to #486 - whynospacesallowed (01/12/2012) [-]
Häyhä used a Finnish militia variant, White Guard M/28 "Pystykorva" or "Spitz", of the Russian Mosin-Nagant rifle, because it suited his small frame (5 ft 3 in/1.60 m). He preferred to use iron sights rather than telescopic sights to present a smaller target (the sniper must raise his head higher when using a telescopic sight), for more reliable visibility (a telescopic sight's glass can fog up easily in cold weather), and aid concealment (sunlight glare in telescopic sight lenses can reveal a sniper's position). Another tactic used by Häyhä was to compact the snow in front of him so that the shot would not disturb the snow and reveal his position.[citation needed] He also kept snow in his mouth, so that the vapor of his breath would not give him away.[citation needed]
The Soviets tried several ploys to get rid of him, including counter-snipers and artillery strikes.
User avatar #488 to #487 - whynospacesallowed (01/12/2012) [-]
On March 6, 1940, Häyhä was shot in the lower left jaw by a Russian soldier during combat. The bullet tumbled upon impact and exited his head. He was picked up by fellow soldiers who said "half his head was missing", but he was not dead: he regained consciousness on March 13, the day peace was declared. Shortly after the war Häyhä was promoted from alikersantti (corporal) to Second Lieutenant by Field Marshal Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim; no one else has gained rank so quickly in Finland's military history. Not in his life; all those kills in one year. I rest my case.
User avatar #135 to #111 - Yggy (01/11/2012) [-]
he killed a total of 750 people in a few weeks, and 505 of them were with a crappy rifle, in the middle of winter, with no scope. he was more badass than anything.

no scope in real life is alot different than games. you still have iron sights that can be trusted more than a scope because they almost never get out of line
User avatar #647 to #238 - Yggy (01/12/2012) [-]
I do not know how games work mate. Iron sights are alright for medium distances, but this guy shot them from so far away it'd have been really hard even with a scope.
