But with so much rain, the density of the water at the coast would have been slightly reduced, therefore causing the boat to sink slightly (very, very slightly). If we were given more information about the distance between the ladder and the sea level, we could finally work out who was phone.

the density of the water wouldnt have changed at all
density is relevent to pressure, state and molar mass
as the molar mass and state do not change they have no effect
and due to 3 feet less of air making virtually no differance to the total volume of air above the water the same applys for the pressure exerted by said air
therefore the density of the water is, for all mesurable and observable cases identical

i'll start by saying yes in this question i completley agree with you the changes are so tiny that its not economically important to measure, however i must say that water denisty does change with its composition not only pressure, salt water is very noticibally different than fresh water. its actually so noticabile in fact that ships aren't considered safe if their plimsoll lines aren't up to standard.

Anyone else wondering what kind of magical rainfall was going on to raise the sea level by 2 and a half feet?

well technically a better definition would be that they are trolls: trick questions are some of the most basic forms of trolling, and a master troll would recognize it immediately

hence, trolls are geniuses

there is no correct answer, because not enough info. was given, you would need the length of the side of the ship, and the starting point in which the water makes contact with the side of the ship
