if the portal is small enough to fit on the table and both portals are the same size, then the table cant fit coming out of the other portal... still hurts my damn head

And also, portals can't be on moving surfaces, so as soon as the table moved it'd break the portal.

There was one situation where portals were one moving surfaces when you destroy the neurotoxin machine in Portal 2. But yeah, you're right.

There is a source engine command you can put into the console of Source to make portals go on any moving surfaces.

The guy you sold the box to put $20 into the box, loss of 20 dollars, so he's at -20. He then gives you $30, so he's now at -50. He then gets 40 dollars, so he's now at -10. He loses $10, you gain $10. Took me a while to figure it out as well =P

right guy then gives another 30$ to left guy in exchange for 40$

right guy gives 50$ and receives 40$ = 10$ debt

With the wind powered car one, not the exact way said in the post, but it seems like something along those lines could be engineered. The only problem would be you could never stop moving..

(12/23/2011) [-]
The reasons windmills arent used pretty much AT all except by environment hippies are because they are INSANELY inefficient... it takes an hour of strong wind for one wind turbine to charge an AA battery. So a few windmills on your car, yeah you could charge your phone...

But you'd also lose alotta speed because theyre not very aerodynamic on a car...

So in exchange for charging your phone you lost 10 mpg , wasting fuel and making your engine work harder... IT DOES MAKE ENERGY, BUT SOOOOOOO NOT worth it...

tldr, the turbines make a PATHETIC amount of electricity, which is balanced out by the fuel loss on your car anyway..

Why wouldn't the light one work?
#667 to #140 - slayzo

(12/23/2011) [-]
Because first of all, light weakens. If he turned off the light, the light would still disappear, due to no source to supplement more light.

If he kept the light on, he'd still be paying for the electricity, and it would only light up that one spot.

Actually no. Portuguese wind turbines produce 2MWhours of electricity or simply put 2 MW per hour. My dad is head of portuguese renewable energy companies and unless you have a massive AA battery you'll destroy them.

why wont the one with the lightbulb and solar panels work?
#89 to #83 - nevergetsdubs
Reply +6
(12/23/2011) [-]
Same reason, solar panels are extremely inefficient.
It takes a 4 ft by 4ft solar panel under maximum sunlight (desert/equator) just to power a small toaster.

2nd of all... a lightbulb produces only physical light and heat......
It wont charge a solar panel 1%...

Solar panels absorb radiation from sunlight such as UV, IR, MW, and RW which are beyond visible light. Thats where they get their energy from , not the actual light itself...

Think again. Portals are not circles.
Imagine oval manhole covers and oval manholes. If you would just remove it and rotate it so the longer side would be its height, you could easily get it inside.

Then The whole theory of portals is busted. the planet earth rotates at a velocity at over 1,000 miles per hour. additionally, earth is orbiting the sun at roughly 67,000 miles per hour.

to pinpoint exact x-y-z coordinates in the universe relative to the universe itself is impossible as of today; we do not know the volume (or the beginning or end for measurement's sake; not the actual birth / death of the universe.)

my god sir, you forget the theory of relativity (or some **** like that). There's a reason that a speed gun reads 0 when pointed at a non-moving OBJECT on earth. Its because relative to everything around it, it is not moving. The portals are placed on objects that to not alter the state of the portal through speed or movement. So, while everything is constantly moving (including the atoms in each of our bodies) the portals are able to exclusively exist on non-moving objects because they do not alter the portals' physics. Keep in mind this is a video game we're having a physics related discussion about, but my guess is that this is what the creator of portal would say if you asked him.

Alright. let us look at the end of Portal 2, shall we? When Chell shot one portal at the moon, Wheatley was sucked into outer space. How could that happen if both portals need to have the same velocity, in your theory, if the Earth and the moon have completely different velocities?
#696 to #608 - accdodson
