WHAT THE **** DID I JUST READ?

PAGAN DAY OF THE SUN-GOD RA?

EGYPTIANS WEREN'T PAGAN, THEY WERE EGYPTIAN.

PAGANISM IS A RITUALISTIC WORSHIP OF NATURE, NONE OF WHICH WERE CANNIBALISTIC PER SE.

THE CATHOLIC SACRAMENT DOESNT ACTUALLY CONSIST OF THE CONSUMPTION OF THE FLESH OF CHRIST: BUT RATHER A PROCESS THEY CALL TRANSUBSTANTIATION, WHICH IS SIMPLY A REPRESENTATION OF THE FULFILLMENT OF AN ALLEGORY CHRIST SPOKE OF IN REFERENCE TO WHAT IS KNOWN TO CHRISTIANITY AS "THE ATONEMENT".

SO WHATS GOING ON HERE?

[big][big] OP is the stereotypical 13 year old intolerant Atheist. Everything he knows about religion comes from Brian Griffin and Jon Stewart. And judging by all of the thumbs that this has, most of this site fits that demographic. YOU DONT UNDERSTAND, THEY ACTUALLY WORSHIP NATURE: NOT ANY PARTICULAR DEITY PER SE.

ADDITIONALLY, I DISAGREE WITH YOUR CONTENTION. A DEITY BEING A FORCE OF NATURE IS A CONSEQUENCE, BUT TO GO AS FAR AS TO SAY THE EGYPTIANS WERE PAGAN ON ACCOUNT OF THE FACT THEY BELIEVED THEIR DEITIES, OR GODS RATHER, COULD INFLUENCE NATURE IS QUITE FALLACIOUS. IT WOULD BE LIKE CHRISTIANS WORSHIPING A PARTICULAR ASPECT OF CHRIST, INSTEAD OF WORSHIPING CHRIST.

1. Paganism is a blanket term, referring to all non-abrahamic polytheistic religions. So yes, the egyptians were pagans.

2. The cannabalistic comment refers to the sacrament, so that comment is unecessary.

3. The Fourth Council of the Lateran, which convened beginning November 11, 1215, spoke of the bread and wine as "transubstantiated" into the body and blood of Christ: "His body and blood are truly contained in the sacrament of the altar under the forms of bread and wine, the bread and wine having been transubstantiated, by God's power, into his body and blood". This term was not widely used until the end of the twelfth century. According to Catholicism over history, they truely believe they are consuming the blood and body of christ, because the wine and bread transforms by the power of god.

What is happening here, is you have no solid evidence to back up your claims.

I think the point is, Christmas is a pagan holiday (don't get mad it is)
And btw it is supposed to be the literal body and blood of Christ, a common misunderstanding made by Catholics about their own religion, but it is not a metaphor or a representation, when they say that it is the body and blood, they mean it.

I'm not trolling or trying to be a dick, first of all pagans were the ones who came up with celebrating birthdays, and Jesus was born closer to mid August than December, however the church said that it was December 25 because the pagans celebrated the solstice then and they wanted to assimilate the pagans into Christianity. There are a lot more reason why that's a fact but I'll let you Google that.

And as for the body and blood, a study was done in which a short quiz about different religions was given out to thousands of people of many different religions and countries.
One of the questions was "When you take communion Is the wine and wafer a symbol of Jesus' blood and body or the actual blood and body?"
Almost no Catholics gave the correct answer, which is that it is a literal transformation.
Again not trying to be a dick but those are the facts and if you want to thumb down my comments because you don't like the truth go ahead.

although most Christian religions practice that their Eucharist becomes a symbol of Christ, Roman Catholics believe that the the bread and wine change into the substance of the body and blood of Christ when consecrated in the Eucharist -- not that it's just a representation or 'ritualistic symbol'

People (below) can hardly call christianity a failed thing when millions upon millions uppon millions are part of hundreds of denominations of Christianity...

Furthermore lets just get this straight:

Religion doesn't make people dickheads, being a dickhead makes people dickheads.

People don't need religion to be a cunt (ego Mao, Stalin, Hitler - all pretty much non-religion [Hitler debatable, but definitely didn't do it in the name of Christ])

Everyone uses a higher power or reasoning to exert authority, command, genocide, violence, invasion etc. Everyone also uses higher powers to do basic tasks in the name of that higher power.

For example: Football Hooligans use football as an excuse to be a dickhead, does that mean football (or any sport) is evil? Being an American in the south in the 60s, people were racist and were violent in the name of America, does that mean Americans and America is a dickhead place? People use being part of a political party to be a dickhead to someone, is that party necessarily the party of dickheads??

Because if you believe religion is banned and evil then so is everything that associates you with a higher power: family, nationality, sport, political parties. EVERYTHING. Because people use anything when they can band with someone else as an outlet to begin an attack on someone or something and getting rid of religion or having no religion in the world wouldn't make people less or more of dickheads.

And to the comic, taking anything out of context would make it seem stupid or ridiculous. If I say "Anyone who says "black people are *******" are wrong", and you say that I said "black people are *******" then I'm racist aren't I, but if I quote the whole sentence I'm not. Isn't that right? So don't say things out of context.

And here's Farnsworth, waiting for your red thumbs

Actually he said he was vaguely Christian and didn't join in any sacrament after I think First Holy Communion. He also had plans to destroy the Christian Church in Nazi Germany to set everyone under his own religion and didn't really care about his own personal religion that much. In any case Mao and Stalin caused the deaths of between 50 million to 150 million people, something no one has done in the name of religion.

All I feel and more. If we stopped judging religions by their most dickish members then maybe we could stop the whole pointless squabble and just get on with our lives. And for every Atheist saying that all "religious people" (I hate that kind of grouping) are intolerant towards atheists (and that's somehow an excuse to be intolerant yourself?) just know this. You wouldn't believe how much **** I've copped for being Catholic, never from members of other denominations (in the way many of you claim that we fight amongst ourselves) but always from incredibly dickish atheists. I've been pushed to the ground by people who followed it up with "there is no god" (and no, I was just chilling on the beach, religion was the last thing on my mind), I've had people laugh in my face for saying something other than no when they jeeringly asked if I believed in God (the question itself was out of the blue, all I said was "depends on what your definition of god is").

Catholic btw.

The lost symbol is a brilliant book, longer than The Da Vinci Code but with a better plot. Has some interesting twists and major changes to the usual way his books are written. I have really wanted to find Angels and Demons somewhere but nobody in Romania has even heard of Dan Brown, let alone his books. American readers have it so easy!
He is a brilliant author, with a gift for suspense and making every book a page flipper. Have never found anyone like him or any books that I could like more.
