Did you read my comment? Do I ONCE reference the movie? I clearly say that I love the BOOK series. Now, I did also enjoy the movie- but that has nothing to do with what i originally said.

Ah, I clearly see now that you are a troll, or at least what may be called a troll-in-training. Possibly even a Trollwan (in reference to Padawan) but probably not, as they are highly respected. I respect you, while I can not say the same for all that you have said. I hope you have had a good day. I look forward to, possibly in the future, speaking to you.

I did the math, there are 5,865,696,000,000 miles in 1 light year.

5,865,696,000,000 x 600 = 3,519,417,600,000,000 \ 17,500 (maximum speed of the space shuttle) it would take us approximately 201,109,577,143 years to get to this planet.

So, somebody, please tell NASA to start working on something more important.

In the meantime, pic is slightly related.

Ummmmmmm, that shuttle goes 17,500 miles PER HOUR, not per year. So it'd take us 22, 957, 714 years to get there. ;P

It's still a constant speed. All you did was multiply it, and divide by a larger number.

Nope he's completely correct - original post posted 2.012x10^11 HOURS, or a bit over 200 billion.
1 year = 8 765.81277 hours

So its significantly less, like anon said, at 22, 957, 714 years. Which is much more reasonable than the original.

We don't even use the shuttles anymore, they've all been retired. But the point is moot, NASA won't be able to get us there, they have no funding anymore. In this case, our best bet is probably the russians.

Well, we CAN make solar-sails. But they're expencive as ****. And with a solar sail it'd still take aprox. 6000 years.

We can also make nuke powered spaceships, blasing of 4 nukes per second for about 6 minutes will make the vessel go almost half the speed of light, but we'll have to build the spaceship and the nukes in space, and we do not have suitable spacestation yet. why in space, you might ask, well, what if that thing came crashing down again with 4*6*60 nukes aboard?

Now I've filled my fair share of geekyness for today.

Well, if the planet is 600 light years away, and the the distance the light travels each year is one light year, it'd take 600 years to get there traveling at the speed of light, no?...

Yes, but when you travel at the speed of light, time slows down inside the object traveling at teh speed of light so 600 years would basically feel like 80 years

but as you reach the speed of light time around you will slow down though the people on board said ship will feel normal so depending on how much time is slowed down when at the speed of light it could be possible to reach the planet with some kind of possible help life extending thing

It should, but a light year is a measurement of distance. Not necessarily time. There are 100's of factors that would produce all sorts of different outcomes, but that pretty irrelevant, seeing as we'll probably never even make it out of our solar system in the next 100 years.
