There are so many examples,
Anders Behring Breivik, read about him. Timothy McVeigh, read about him.
Crusades, read about it. Native forced conversions. Inquisitions KKK. Hitler and please do not deny he was christian
And there are many more examples.
User avatar #815 to #201 - Ruspanic (11/27/2011) [-]
The problem is that most of those recent examples did not do what they did in the name of religion. Breivik's reasons were political, although he did belong to some sort of Christian cult. McVeigh's motives were likewise secular. Hitler's motive was nationalism - for his country and for the Aryan race. The Crusades, forced conversions, and Inquisitions were of course religiously motivated, but they aren't very recent examples.
#361 to #201 - jaggerz (11/27/2011) [-]
I see what you're saying, but rather than looking at people who claimed to be Christians, why not look at the principles true Christianity promotes (and not that Westboro Baptist stuff, God hates [insert] stuff, or other examples of what Jesus wouldn't ever do)
#608 to #361 - nyo (11/27/2011) [-]
And look at what the Qur'an promotes.
Peace. Literally, peace.
You're stereotyping, just like the media, which brainwashes the less educated public.

Well then.
I have honestly never seen anything as ignorant as this.
This is called fanaticism and what you have failed to highlight is that every religion out there has its weird and twisted conclusions.
#677 to #658 - erwinrommell (11/27/2011) [-]
Does not matter. It is still religion that flies them into buildings.

Stop hiding behind false pretences. IT WAS RELIGION AND RELIGION ONLY! Nothing else mattered for them as they were doing the martyr and suicide task. Religion flew them there.

Stop pretending that religion is good at all times and whenever something bad happens, i.e. martyrs, crusades, inquisition, genocide, it was "misguidance". People have spent years studying their religious texts, more than you ever will and come to these conclusions and done these things. YOU are misguided most likely, those people ar enot - they follow the teachings of their religion to the bone.

tl;dr I am tired of people hiding behind "it is not what religion teaches" flag and calling everything misguidance or w/e whenever something bad happens, but claiming all the fruit of labour when something good happens.

pic is very related

#702 to #677 - ilovescake (11/27/2011) [-]
What you failed to realize is that I DID NOT say religion had no part in misguided teachings. You have failed to realize that it is also misguidance that leads to people following a certain religion or way of life without forming a well thought out, community friendly, civilized, cultured and modern decision. Again this is known as fanaticism based on an idea. I do not believe I have ever seen the words " I must kill and destroy the ones that do not follow my beliefs" in any religious texts I have encountered wether they are christian, muslim, Buddhist, hindu, or jewish texts. Therefore your comment about people following their religion to the bone is invalid and unusable.
You have basically taken a word that does not necessarily need to have any association to religious texts that are altered and edited with time and have made one conclusion that does not represent that word.
Why not take in to account politics and its influences?

What is the punishment in islam for leaving the religion? stoning to death. ******* STONING TO DEATH!

everyday in middle east there are beheadings and stonings for different kinds of things that go against Sharia. It is a hateful religion. As well as the Old Testament, it is riddled with hatred against non-believers, homosexuals, and all other minority groups.

How can you fail to pick this up is beyond me. What kind of edited texts you read?

 http://www.youtube(dot)com/watch?v=PY8fjFKAC5k

here watch some Hitchens or Dawkins. They both very well outline everything that is wrong with religion.

Of course politics influences this, but religion drives the political motifs of most of these people. Bin Laden didn't commit terrorist acts because of politics, he did it because God told him, he knew god was on his side.

I happen to live in the middle east, in-fact I happen to live in the gulf and in a country that is regarded as extremely islamic.
I happen to know that stoning only occurs in extremely small villages that are still untouched by modern thoughts.
I happen to know that in a minority of small villages in the US of A for example, which I have lived in for many years, it is not any better or civilized and far worse things occur than stoning due to choosing to leaving a religion.
I happen to not follow one specific 'religion'.
Religion has hardly any influence in politics ANY MORE. Business and profit is ideally the main determinant today.
#723 to #714 - anon (11/27/2011) [-]
Bin laden basically lied bullied and bought most people into committing the acts of terrorism they did, finding the most weak and lowest people and promising them a better life if they played their part in islam and held up what he pointed to as the sixth pillar of islam, he promised their families money and them paradise he was nothing more than a liar and a con man, the fact he used religion seems to have him branded as something more, no he was a conman. That's not to say jihad should be frowned upon, it is a just cause, something bin laden abused, but you need to understand if a Muslim were to live by nothing but the five pillars of islam he would be one the nicest men you may ever meet. Islam really is the religion of peace, the reason why they have such strict rules and punishments is to deter others, and rest assured not only is it done in a very humane way, one i have personally witnessed but only to the very worst of people
#733 to #723 - anon (11/27/2011) [-]
You mean "the very worst of people and women". Mutilation, complete social isolation, outrageous punishments for infidelity even in cases of rape, and violent opposition to open speech, how very humane of them...

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with Islam in general but the middle east is some assbackwards place and the staticity of it is largely related to religious leaders and books that praise the carrying of those "sacred traditions" down through generations.
#778 to #702 - anon (11/27/2011) [-]
Coincidence that only Abrahamic religions start bloody and endless struggles? I've never heard of Buddhist teachings to murder. And hell, Hindu's won't even murder animals for food. Shintoism, Confucianism and so never raised a weapon against people who don't believe them.

I'm quite sorry to tell you that the punishment for apostasy in Islam is death. The mere suggestion of a punishment is a great fallacy. They claim they are a religion of peace but they make it no secret that the world has to adhere to Islam and needs to follow their creeds and ideology.
And it's not only Islam. Christianity has had it's share of the blood shed in order to make people believe their lies and bigotry and worship their God. The inquisition is not only a stain on the face of humanity, but it also is one of the most disgusting and horrifying chapters in human history. Why even today, fundamentalist Christians are considered a hazardous threat to many societies.
Jews also have a share of bloody history. Hell, the horrors of the old testament are purely Jewish authored.
But you know what is more horrifying? Is that they make no secret of that, and they attempt to procure the respect of their surrounding for some bloody believes, and pressure governments and their constitutions for more rights and respect.

No darl, it's not the people that are misguided, it's the religion that is wrong.
User avatar #789 to #778 - ilovescake (11/27/2011) [-]
I have used the wrong word in my argument. I did not mean religion as adherence to a predetermined set of rules as you explain. What should have been said: Religion in my perspective is equivalent to a self set group of beliefs that one wishes to follow free of any of the influence of the dreaded text. Darl
User avatar #809 to #778 - Ruspanic (11/27/2011) [-]
Judaism, Islam, and Christianity are practiced peacefully by millions. The religious beliefs of some people of these faiths drive them to great violence and atrocities, but it is not fair to call entire religions wrong or evil because terrible things have been done in their name (unless by "wrong" you mean literally false).
User avatar #808 to #677 - Ruspanic (11/27/2011) [-]
Religion doesn't fly people into buildings, pilots do.
#716 to #677 - anon (11/27/2011) [-]
Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot and a lot of other dictators have killed millions in the name of their political/ethical ideals not anything religious. If you look at recent attacks, the majority of them that are related to religion, also have other causes. For example, the 9/11 terrorists were probably angry about the U.S.' control over middle east governments(i.e. the coup of Mohammad Mossadeq in Iran) and it's support of Israel who has violently forced people out of towns that their families have lived in for centuries.

I do agree that religion provides a more easily suggestible population and religion can often me be used as a front to protect violent interest as in the case of Saudi Arabian funded madrassa schools throughout the middle east that prey on the impoverished to spread their violent ambitions. I also must agree that in the case of the crusades, islamic conquest in India, and the inquisition, religion holds all the blame because these were united movements stemming from the religion's main leadership not from an outsider whose views were probably influenced at least as much by their own secular beliefs.
