i fully expect to get a **** ton of red thumbs for this, but I actually like newer rock. If you can get past the occasionally faggy lyrics, i find the actual instrumentation to be a lot more interesting than older stuff. I don't play guitar so i don't know a lot about what is necessarily the most technical stuff, but it sounds to me like there are a lot of bands that play more interesting and difficult stuff than metallica did, and I know for a fact that drumming has gotten a lot better since the 80s and 90s. Sure, some of those guys could drum circles around a lot of todays drummers, but they didn't, at least not in their recorded stuff. They kept it all pretty simple. I haven't heard a lot of older metal drumming that i couldn't play in my sleep, whereas a lot of newer heavy stuff is ******* insane. Just my opinion. I think people tend to let nostalgia bias them against anything new. There is good music being made today.

see, the thing about older metal bands is that all of their drummers were ******* amazing, but they held back in their songs. Like, even kiss's drummer was a really good drummer. They just didn't bust it out as much.

for example, this.

and i can find examples of more melodic guitar stuff from different bands, but this is what i'm talking about with the drums.
