Debate about religion........

What else is new?
User avatar #858 - youcame (10/27/2011) [-]

im getting really tired of these religion bashing posts getting front page.

never in my life, have i questioned what other believe in.

whether their atheist, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, whatever. i dont care. you have the right to believe what you want. just dont mock what i believe.

just because im a Christian that doesnt mean im a creationist, and that i think those who dont believe in god will "burn in hell" and that you need to believe in god. No. as i said, believe what you want. just dont mock what i believe.
User avatar #862 to #858 - asgardian (10/27/2011) [-]
Actually by defining yourself as a Christian you think those who dont believe in God will "burn in hell" and that you need to believe in god. If you don't believe that you're not a Christian. You have a personal religion with a personal God void of scripture.
User avatar #863 to #862 - youcame (10/27/2011) [-]
how are you going to tell me what i believe?
User avatar #867 to #863 - asgardian (10/27/2011) [-]
I'm not telling you what you believe. I'm telling you what Christians believe.

Being Christian means you believe in Christ AND the bible. The bible states that those who do not accept Jesus as their lord and savior will suffer for eternity in Hell. If that's not what you believe than you are not Christian.
User avatar #878 to #867 - youcame (10/27/2011) [-]
hey man.

theres more than one branch of Christianity, you know that right?

the branch im a part of happens to be called Seventh Day Adventist, and has some very different beliefs than what you think a "normal" christian does. plus, even i f was a "normal" christian (which is what your assuming) i would still have my GOD- GIVEN right to variate what i want to believe. and nowhere in the bible does it say that those who dont believe in god and jesus will burn in hell. and yes. i do believe god, jesus, and the bible.
User avatar #887 to #878 - asgardian (10/27/2011) [-]
Really? No where in the bible it says that huh? Have you ever actually read the bible? I find most Christians haven't. Don't sit here and defend every branch of Christianity if you don't agree with their intolerance.

As a Christian church, Seventh-day Adventists are a faith community rooted in the beliefs described by the Holy Scriptures AKA the Holy Bible.
User avatar #895 to #887 - youcame (10/27/2011) [-]
oh my god... i HAVE read the bible. have you? do you even know anything about my religeon? or are you just assuming **** ?
heres some stuff thats different
1. i worship on saturdays
2. i cant eat pork, birds with webbed feet, bottom feeders, shell fish, and many. many. other creatures that a "normal" christian can.
3. we variate, and exert certain parts of the bible, because we are not a "normal" chistians.
4. just because im a christian, that doesnt mean i cant vairiate my beliefs? god gave me the right to believe what i want? i can be christian, and not think everyone who doesnt believe in god will burn in hell.

if your a good person, youll go to heaven.

its as simple as that
User avatar #906 to #895 - komania (10/27/2011) [-]
Wait... why no birds with webbed feet? Or shell fish? o.O
User avatar #913 to #906 - youcame (10/27/2011) [-]
its... complicated.
the shell fish, because they mostly eat of the bottoms of oceans, and lakes, and whatnot, so their bottom feeders, and eat other fishes **** essentially. so that apparently makes them filthy creature, and birds with webbed feet because the nephew of satan was born with webbed feet.

so. yeah.
User avatar #919 to #913 - komania (10/27/2011) [-]
Yes but birds with webbed feet are still God's creation.... Saying animals are filthy would be disrespectful to God, no?
User avatar #930 to #919 - youcame (10/27/2011) [-]
well, not exactly.
i see what you saying, and in a sense your right. but these animals where made by god to populate the earth and to help with the functioning of how all his creations go together. they just werent meant to be eaten by what i believe.
User avatar #937 to #930 - komania (10/27/2011) [-]
Ah alright, stuff like that comes down to personal belief and interpretation, but I see where you're coming from. Shellfish is too delicious to avoid for me :3
User avatar #899 to #895 - asgardian (10/27/2011) [-]
You just used the lord's name in vain.

There is no such thing as a "normal" Christian. There is no branch that is simply "Christianity" by itself.

I accept your right to believe what you want, I'm not taking that away. Read this next sentence slowly and let it sink in.

The beliefs that you hold are NOT Christian if you openly admit you variate from Christian beliefs, therefore do NOT defend other Christians with whom you do NOT share the same beliefs.
#907 to #899 - anon (10/27/2011) [-]
Alright here is some info for you. Taking the lord's name in vain does not mean saying "Jesus Christ" or "God damn it." It means using God as an excuse for something.

Example: Crusades - "In the name of God I kill you"
User avatar #911 to #907 - asgardian (10/27/2011) [-]
It also applies to replacing it's meaning with something to express negativity.
User avatar #903 to #899 - youcame (10/27/2011) [-]

User avatar #914 to #903 - asgardian (10/27/2011) [-]
I never claimed to.

I claimed to know about Christianity, which your religion is not.
User avatar #920 to #914 - youcame (10/27/2011) [-]
its a branch of Christianity.

there's branches of Judaism, Hinduism, Muslim, nearly every religion has multiple branches.
User avatar #923 to #920 - asgardian (10/27/2011) [-]
You openly admit you variate from the fundamental beliefs, yet still classify yourself as an advocate of them. Forgive me if that fails to make any sense.
User avatar #936 to #923 - youcame (10/27/2011) [-]
okay. let me put this really simple for you.

I am a Christian.

A 7th Day Adventist.

7th Day Adventist is a "type" of Christianity if you will

Making me a... what?

A Christian.

i dont see how i could make it any simpler than that.

Please explain how I'm wrong. I know it's typical of the religious to just make claims without supporting them but that doesn't work for me. I can simply reply, "No you're an Idiot, YOU go do some research." That won't get very far will it. Let me warn you, do not test my knowledge of the scripture for I was raised devoutly for 21 years before deconverting.
User avatar #901 to #890 - komania (10/27/2011) [-]
Belief is a personal thing, religion is based on belief, your beliefs shouldn't be based on your religion. I look at The Bibile, see the New Testament, and see "Love other people and be a good person.", that's what my religion tells me to do. I don't obey every obscure detail or anything that goes against that principle, which is the foundation for my religion. It bothers me that people classify other people based on one religion. You don't know anything about me yet you can judge me as you fully understand my beliefs because of a title?

You seem like you experienced fundamentalist Christianity. Everything in The Bible needs to be taken with a grain of salt, considering it was written in a much different context and translated repeatedly.

tl;dr You're an idiot for classifying a person as a religion, and assuming and judgment them without knowing them or their personal beliefs.

“For truly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass the law until all is accomplished. Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:18-19 RSV) Clearly the Old Testament is to be abided by until the end of human existence itself. None other then Jesus said so.

All of the vicious Old Testament laws will be binding forever. "It is easier for Heaven and Earth to pass away than for the smallest part of the letter of the law to become invalid." (Luke 16:17 NAB)

Jesus strongly approves of the law and the prophets. He hasn’t the slightest objection to the cruelties of the Old Testament. "Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill. Amen, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest part or the smallest part of a letter will pass from the law, until all things have taken place." (Matthew 5:17 NAB)

"All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for refutation, for correction, and for training in righteousness..." (2 Timothy 3:16 NAB)

"Know this first of all, that there is no prophecy of scripture that is a matter of personal interpretation, for no prophecy ever came through human will; but rather human beings moved by the holy Spirit spoke under the influence of God." (2 Peter 20-21 NAB)

I can go on.
#932 to #908 - anon (10/27/2011) [-]
i thought that referred to the ten commandments ?
User avatar #935 to #908 - komania (10/27/2011) [-]
You obviously didn't read the bulk of my post. And still, take everything with a grain of salt. Words that were repeated over thousands of years through oral tradition, translated repeatedly, and such, are bound to be changed.

And by the way, those lines, in my believe, to the Ten Commandments should still be obeyed, but obviously such "laws" (which really aren't) like "An eye for an eye" should be disregarded in response to Jesus' teachings.

IMHO, it sounds like you're just rebelling against your religiously oppressive childhood.

"Know this first of all, that there is no prophecy of scripture that is a matter of personal interpretation, for no prophecy ever came through human will; but rather human beings moved by the holy Spirit spoke under the influence of God." (2 Peter 20-21 NAB)
User avatar #950 to #939 - komania (10/27/2011) [-]
Yes, but over time humans could have changed the original scripture. Therefore it requires interpretation to figure out what the original message was, as it could have been distorted over time.
User avatar #952 to #951 - komania (10/27/2011) [-]
...because you can make any more valid points on your own?
User avatar #953 to #952 - asgardian (10/27/2011) [-]
No, because I can disprove your point using someone who shares your beliefs. Don't act like all of your points haven't come from some outside source.

Let's focus on the argument, don't resort to insults. It demonstrates how ignorant you are.
User avatar #975 to #953 - komania (10/27/2011) [-]
You're the person who brought up an insult against somebody while they were trying to spread love and peace. You're the person who decided to clump everybody together because you cannot use your brain to distinguish a person from their religion. Not all people who are religious are fundamentalists, many people contextualize the workks. You, sir, are the ignorant one, and the one who began with the insults. So maybe before you continue making asinine posts to try to make yourself seem better than others, you can take a minute to think and realize that maybe the world would be a better place if people like you would keep to themselves.

I will not take part in an argument on the internet, for nobody ever wins.
User avatar #976 to #975 - asgardian (10/27/2011) [-]
The problem is that they defend the fundamentalist. It's like being guilty by accomplice.

I still fail to see how I'm ignorant for opposing hateful, intolerant scripture. That's religious logic for you I guess.

"A hateful idea and a hateful practice and a hateful theory but very much to be opposed in our daily lives where there are people who sincerely want to ruin the good relations that could exist between different peoples, nations, races, countries, and tribes - who openly say that they love death more than we love life and who are betting that with God on their side, they are right about that. So when I say religion poisons everything I mean to say it infects us in our most basic integrity. It says we can’t be moral without big brother and without a totalitarian permission. It means we can’t be good to one-another without this. It says we must be afraid and we must also be forced to love someone whom we fear - the essence of sadomasochism, the essence of abjection, the essence of the master-slave relationship. It knows that death is coming and can’t wait to bring it on. I say this is evil. Though I do some nights stay home I enjoy more the nights when I go out and fight against this ultimate wickedness and ultimate stupidity. Thank you."
-Christopher Hitchens
User avatar #977 to #976 - komania (10/27/2011) [-]
Alright you seem like a smart enough guy, so let me just phrase this simply:

Fundamentalists who spread hate, are guilty of spreading hate. Just because I am a Christian does not mean I'm a fundamentalist, nor does it mean I spread hate. I don't defend those who misuse The Bible or take things literally, but you can't clump and classify a person based on a religion. You need to get to know a person as a person, and not immediatly jump on somebody because of a title.
User avatar #978 to #977 - asgardian (10/27/2011) [-]
I'm not dumping a person. I'm just telling those people who are defending all Christians yet disagree with like half of the bible to say that up front. You're title ******** just isn't realistic. You need to say you are a new era Christian or a Spiritual Christian because Christian by itself accompanied by defending the bible, then turning around 5 minutes later and saying "oh but I don't listen to that part" is ******* stupid. If someone calls themself a Nazi you're not going to be like, Oh i'm sure he's a good guy.
#900 to #890 - anon (10/27/2011) [-]
