true, true, I guess what I meant by listing those examples is that dropping out of school doesn't have to be the end or you.

(also, aren't there more than 3 billion people on Earth? or am I mixing it up with the age of the Earth again?)
(also, and this is a phrase that sees a lot of use THAT ISN'T HOW STATISTICS WORKS)

I recently listened to an NPR report about this form of teaching in Japan. It's a huge problem for them now because while everyone can pass the tests, they are losing a large part of their creative thinking and problem solving skills.

But at the same time students are being pushed through the highschool system because they have athletic prowess. Some schools even go as far as allowing coaches to take the sat and act for their athletes. My college doesnt have very high requirements in the first place but people are getting in and expecting to not have to do homework. Just something ive noticed i went to highschool in Alaska and there isnt as much of a problem with that but there still is one

i take some offence to this(i know its not directed solely at me, but still), for i am a teacher, and i try to make my class as fun and laid back as possible, within reason. every morning, when i go into my classroom, i go on this site, find some funny OC, and attempt to draw it on my board. when a student asks where is it from, i tell them, and when imm done teaching, i show them. i allow people to draw in my class. i allow profanity in my class.. i allow most forms of self expression in my class. yes, profanity is a form of self expression, within the right context. i allow peoples opinions to be heard and spoken freely.

thanks. i appreciate that. people say teaching is a thankless job. i say ******** , its thankless to teachers who cant control their class(students), and dont connect with the students. i do, for both. i dont yell often, but when i do, my students know to shut the **** up real quick(i have a deep voice, and can yell fairly loud). i also dont write students up if they misbehaive. its pointless. they get a free vacation. **** that. if i think a student deserves a writeup, i simply give them homework of a book report, 5 pages long, on a book they havent read. if they complete it, they were up all night, and they wont forget not to **** off in my class. if they dont, they get a zero, which will pull their grade down a letter roughly, and they have to work harder to counteract the zero. im a hardass when i need to be, but its not very often.

I used to have problems with nosy neighbors that would ask me when I was walking outside during school hours, "Why aren't you in school?" and would say how I wasn't going to be as smart as other kids because I was homeschooled. Yet a lot of the school kids in my area are a just a waste of oxygen, and yet I interned for several politicians at 15, got certified as an Emergency Medical Technician at 16, and started college classes before getting out of highschool.

User avatar #34 - Trollworth (10/21/2011) [-]
I don't think this is the problem... I mean look back to the 1960's. They were far more strict in the classrooms and it was unheard of to encourage creativity and free thinking. Yet back then, students scored far higher on tests and society functioned smoothly. There's a serious problem with this generation's sense of entitlement. I believe the problem starts at home, not at schools.
#43 to #34 - catbox (10/21/2011) [-]
No, I don't think that's it either. I think that schools are based on the sense of "Well it's always been this way: Why change it?". Technology has increased at an extraordinary rate, but schools have barely changed at all. Why? It's because schools now were designed for the industrial revolution and for kids who work on the farm (Why do you think we have summer off?). I think we should have 4 medium sized breaks instead of one big one. Not only that, but students should have a time every day to relax and take a break (lunch does not count). Also, we should actually acknowledge the arts instead of focussing on only Math, English, Science, etc.

So much is wrong with this picture. I wonder if anyone realizes how easy school is, and that 90% of people who complain about it just don't like homework and not getting to be lazy. SOMEBODY has to teach you history/math/english and so on. If everybody were left to their own devices our society would be even stupider then it is, and we're already doing pretty ******* bad. Sure, I hated homework, and getting up early, but it was easy. I left with a **** ton of useful information, that I'm going to use SOMEDAY. maybe not frequently, but ******* someday. The point of school is education for the masses, so that everybody has the necessary resources to ******* function. Most of the time in school the teachers spend giving you the ability to breeze through tests, which I did, because it was ******* easy. One day, when you're responsible for your own bills, rent/house payments, and the only regularity you have in your life is having to go to work or maybe college, you'll realize that being in school, for the same amount of hours on the same days of every week, with few responsibilities and somebody else feeding you and paying your utilities was easy. Now to wait for my red thumbs for being rational.

I graduated from high school a year ago, so I'm not far gone from what they are teaching right now. My little brother is also in high school and I talk to him about it all the time. I do not disagree with the cartoon, but I did mislead you, as I meant to say "post" not "picture" and I apologize for that. It's the posters false interpretation of the picture (see his title) that got me riled up, as it seemed to hint that he was just using the picture as an excuse to unify under the "school sucks" flag.
#42 to #5 - omicron (10/21/2011) [-]
I don't think that was the point of the picture at all. What I got from it was that schools are placing far too much emphasis on students being able to pass tests, while not actually learning anything substantial, and also far less emphasis (even going so far as to cut spending from) the arts and other activities.
User avatar #44 to #42 - FatterKid (10/21/2011) [-]
I'm really not referencing the picture. It's the posters annoying misinterpretation of the picture that makes me angry. Seems like if people see stuff like this they instantly unite under the "YEAH SCHOOL SUCKS" flag.

i think its implying to the fact that although testing the main subjects standards are high, too much of the budget is placed towards it, my personal secondary education music department was a ******* mess because, Music got no budget whatsoever we had nothing to use. its almost a sense to make the classroom colorful. i agree with you that there is nothing wrong with schools how they are, but the budget on the arts really does need improving.
User avatar #7 to #6 - FatterKid (10/20/2011) [-]
THIS I can agree with. Schools these days seem to misplace budget a lot. Such as putting all their efforts into the sports programs, and taking from arts/choir/band programs and so on. It also wouldn't hurt to improve school utilities from time to time, like getting some more decent bathrooms.

I remember in my middle school, every other month we'd get a whole new batch of Mac Computers. Top of the line stuff. Now, if you go and look at our music department, we didn't have enough money to buy staples for the sheet music packets in choir, we didn't have enough for new strings for our instruments in the music class, we had 4 people to a keybored in music class and all the guitars we did have were all so badly beaten up, I remember one kid picking it up and the neck splitting down the fretbored. Please for the love of god, fund the music programs. Stop buying usless computers when we have 4 classrooms worth of 7 month old macs that we don't use anymore.

Our highschool was raising money for an asfault football field. the goal was one million dollars. It's been going on for about 6 years, and we've only raised about half of that. But every year, they cut the bus routes even more, they bring the price of food up by a dollar or so, and they add the price of football games. Now, our sister school wanted to buy an asfault field too. They paid about half of what we were paying at 400,000 dollars. Bull **** right?
User avatar #11 to #10 - FatterKid (10/20/2011) [-]

American middle schools:
Telling kids to "follow their dreams" and that they can "be what they want to be" while at the same time making the kids who want to pursue a career in music take the same ******** music class as the kids who don't know **** about music. (music is just an example that I can relate to)

Telling kids that they are all "special in their own different ways" while at the same time picking favorites and giving undeserved bad grades to anyone who isn't one of the predetermined favorites.

Still telling kids to "follow your dreams" and "if you work hard enough at it you can be whatever you want to be" while at the same time giving homework which takes up all your time on weekdays and some of the weekend so that not only can you not "follow your dreams" in school, you have no time to "work hard enough at it" even outside of school.

An anon put it quite nicely in comment #212:
"Our entire system at achool is a facade. After primary school its basically just trivia questions to keep us busy. There is no purpose for me to know that Kilimanjaro is 3 962 meters high. To fact that I know this, tells nothing about my intelligence, it only tells about my ability to learn. There is no purpose to this fact, yet this is what goes on tests."

For anyone who's going to say "you only think that because you got bad grades" I got straight a's every report card every year since first grade and have been going to a private school since sixth.

Think we and our parents (probably bad grammer) work our entire life up until the age of 17/18 to learn, but the knowledge never stays. Ask your parents a question from middle school and they probably won't know, some may though. Not to mention that little piece of paper you get or "diploma" means so much, even though it is a lie. And lets say you grow up to be a lumberjack in a tree service, did you ever need to know chemistry, geometry, history, or algebra to know how to swing an axe. not saying you should drop out but this system is not perfect.

It's not the content that's important, it's the fact that you're being exposed to a variety of different fields of academic interest, so that you can decide to pursue them later in life.

Also, you acquire the capacity to think analytically and approach any problem in a series of rational, methodical steps.
Does that sound like it will be important at all?
