Bush was in office for 8 years. The federal debt went up 2 trillion. Obama has been in office for about what 3 years? And the debt is up 5 trillion.

The problem with this statement is that no one man is responsible. It was not just Bush or just Obama. It was the government under Bush and under Obama that is to blame. In reality, the President has little power. He can pardon anyone of crimes, he can sign and veto a bill, he can send small armed forces into operation. He can choose generals. That is it. He can not even declare war. He has to ask permission from Congress. Which brings me to my next topic...relying on about 600 government officials to run a country of 300 million is ludicrous. It will eventually fail. Every government that has ever existed has failed at some point. We had a good system, but over the past 240 years we managed to screw it up.

I think the first two sentences of this post were some of the wisest words I've seen on this website. WE can't keep blaming one man for the greed of our entire nation. If we want anything better we need to stop looking at Washington and start looking at our own decisions.

As a people we need to spend less and save more. The government needs to spend less and tax more. You can't cut taxes but lower budget and expect everything to be smooth sailing. It's like going jogging to lose weight and eating a gallon bucket of ice cream when your done. I know people think they don't deserve to be taxed, but the government needs money more than it has in years, and there aren't very many ways to do that.

To be honest all of our problems can be traced back to a single presidency. Richard Nixon's reign. The government under Nixon created the fiat currency. This completely disbanded our dollar being based off of our gold and silver reserve.A fiat currencies value is determined by government regulation and law. Since then the value of the dollar has steadily declined. Also because our currency has no true value we are able to print more of it. That is what is happening right now. As we fall farther into debt we are printing more money to "counter balance" the drop whilst simultaneously selling away treasuries to other countries in exchange for foreign goods. If we had a currency still based off of our gold reserve, we wouldn't spend money we don't have. Our debt therefore would not continue to increase. The worst thing about this is that according to our constitution Article 1 section 10, it is illegal to establish any currency other than gold and silver a legal tender.

Honestly I don't believe we will recover. I can't wrap my mind around how we would unless China was blown to hell. The stuff going down in New York about Wall Street is only the beginning. Eventually it will be full blown insurrection. Not to mention Europe is going under slowly but surely. Actually other than China and India pretty much the rest of the world is in economic turmoil. What I am dreading here in the U.S. is hyper Inflation. The only thing currently keeping us from Hyper Inflation is China. If they continue to buy our treasuries, everything will be fine. But the second they stop our dollar will lose most of its value and prices of food, soap and everything will skyrocket. It will take wheelbarrows filled with cash to purchase bread, toilet paper will be near to impossible to acquire. With growing tensions with China specifically about how much our dollar is worth, I don't see them putting up with us much longer now that they are completely independent.

Also, I like you name. He is probably one of the most interesting characters in LOTR.

The federal debt went up 6 trillion dollars under Bush. This is due to fighting two wars and lowering taxes at the same fricking time! Obama has increased the national debt by two trillion dollars due to continuing bush era tax cuts, fighting two wars that were already being fought, and loaning money to corporations. I.E ( the stimulus) That made sure car companies did not go under and further ******* up our economy. Please get you're facts right. Prepares for thumbs down...

Tried to fix, but did not. The reason being he is a democratic president surrounded by a republican house. Nothing gets done in that situation. If the republicans would just do what the president believes will help the country, we might have progressed a little. If he fails, they have a shot at 4 years of reign for next election. The only way anything gets done is by support. Put aside you're differences, you're political views and just support the man and government you elected for the job. But no one wants to hear that.

five minutes for what? the ability to browse ****? i have the whole of the internet for that. Maybe a title? wow that's a big deal, suddenly those thumbs are a huge deal and actually matter. No, the reason I dont create an account is because I see no point to, as if making an account on a website suddenly makes you a better person, suddenly gifts you with enlightenment. No, I refuse to make an account because I know that I will never upload anything and therefore won't bother to waste my time as well as the time of other account users with friend requests, dumb comments, and useless thumb currency. This site was founded by anons, I'm not the oldest anon here, but I have been visiting for a number of years, not to see thumbwhoring or to care about repoasts and post wars, but to have a godamn laugh every so often. But suddenly users like you'reself believe they have all the power and are actually a necessity to this site, from a fricken account name nonetheless! No, I believe I will be sparing my "lazy ass" the extra five minutes it would take to create something that would never see the light of day.

I believe I missed the point where expressing my opinion over a website's account management makes me a douche, please point that out kind sir. I didn't say I hated the thumb system, my apologies for the confusion if it sounds like I did, but as an anon, I can say my opinions without having to worry about the consequences of negative thumbs from people who simply don't agree with what I'm saying or those who see the red thumb and think: "I see that he's being thumbed down, rather than read the comment and thumb accordingly, I'll just go with the group mindset and thumb him down as well." Me being an anon means I don't have to worry about this, and I have no intent of trolling other people just for that sake either. Why am I on FJ? I believe I have stated that already: To find and view content that I have not stumbled upon that will either make me laugh, think about something that's never occured to me before, or learn from an interesting fact comp.

Not having to type in captchas all the time is a perk. And if you ever post something you can send it to you're friends for more thumbs while it's trying to get to front page. just saying.

valid points, but it's not even a captcha anymore, atleast I don't consider it one, just a simple addition or subtraction equation. Plus, captchas only have to be typed in maybe once every 10 or so comments. and personally,i feel that i could post withough trouble as the last i knew, anonymous could post content, unless that was changed? But think about it from my point of view, I hvae no intention of posting material, I have no intention of getting involved with making friends over a site that I could just as well use facebook for. Don't get me wrong,FJ is a great way to meet people with similar interests and views based on content material alone, but I really dont want to have to deal with it. No offense to any users. and great name by the way :D

It is fairly annoying, yes. It is a system that is abused to such ends. I hope there are still some good anons who don't let the nameless "power" stay as anons so there isn't as much of a bias. Though I feel that these anons are the ones who comment the least.
