I LOVE the great quotes you use. Philosophyjunk! Anyway
Mark Twain had an interesting life when viewed from start to finish. He took that philosophy of 'living life' seen in the quote and bashed society, religion, government and general humanity in most of his writings. The people who are offended of how he uses the word ' ******* are stupid. He was standing up for the african american community and used it as a satire for racism. All this is cool and all, but not as interesting as the latter parts of his life.
Twain become extremely depressed. He was so depressed, some people (including himself) thought he was insane. At some point, he adopted the idea that life is a delusion. Nothing we do matters because it is a delusion. He wrote (most of, I'll explain) of a book centered around this idea, but he never finished it. The ending would have been that this friend he had met and shown him wonderful things about life and worked as pretty much a magician, would leave and say "I don't exist. I'm a part of your imagination. Then again, maybe you don't exist either." And walk out. Twain outlined the ending, but never finished it. He rewrote the book several times, never EVER finished it before he died. He never could conclude that everything was worthless, even though he lived his life thoroughly convinced that standards didn't matter, in the end of his life he never could come to the climax of saying that life really was worthless. Very, very intriguing.
