Fun Fact! There is no universally accepted term for the plural of platypus. You can say anything such as platypusies, platypi, platypie, platipode, and technically you aren't wrong.. or right! ( This is just personal knowledge and i heard it a while so it might completely false and im too lazy to check so yea)

User avatar #65 to #1 - Durp (09/28/2013) [-]
They are. But if we keep close watch and study their habits, scientists should be safe to handle.
User avatar #6 to #1 - vigorion (09/27/2013) [-]
Why, yes. Yes they are.

"The unusual appearance of this egg-laying, duck-billed, beaver-tailed, otter-footed mammal baffled European naturalists when they first encountered it, with some considering it an elaborate fraud. It is one of the few venomous mammals, the male platypus having a spur on the hind foot that delivers a venom capable of causing severe pain to humans."

Whoever thumbed you down is an idiot.
apart from it being a venom and not a poison.

Also, I think I might have pissed him off at some point. He wrote "feck yew" on my profile, and has been thumbing all my comments down. He did delete the comment, but still.

I didn't actually know the difference between venomous and poisonous before now. Thanks for correcting me on that, I like to be sure that my facts are correct.

And your link is where I got my information from, I did a piece on the platypus a couple of years ago, and still remember a few facts.

I heard birds have teethlike things in their throats that kind of grind up things they swallow so they don't choke.
That could be complete ******** since my only source was an elementary school teacher.

I hope they didn't take it that far in real life. Poor platypus.
User avatar #14 - uzzwick (09/27/2013) [-]
That's two platypus posts on the same day.

#12 - DangerToManifold (09/27/2013) [-]
i'm assuming this refers to the "scientists" here in England. the platypus they were presented with was dead and the fact that it looked completely ridiculous and was presented as a mammal with a beak gave good reason for them to suspect a hoax.
#48 - anon (09/28/2013) [-]
Was I the only one fearfully expecting the beak to come off in a bloody mess at the end? I think I've been on the internet too long.

did you know they have poisonous spurs on their hind legs? they are one of the few mammals to produce venom and the only mammal to lay eggs. i think someone just stuck snakes, beavers, and a duck together.
#26 to #22 - anon (09/27/2013) [-]
They aren't the only ones to lay eggs, there are four other monotremes you're leaving out ,but the 4 left are all species of Echidnas
