Welp. This pic is already a FJ regular. Whenever science is even remotely relevant, it is to be posted.

Just guessing, but because it's too large he struggles at first and then learns to accommodate it.

Well it's a metal of some variety (couldn't say just looking at it), and it is oxidizing very quickly.
#36 to #13 - noobiereaper (09/20/2013) [-]
not really oxidizing mate, its changing its crystal structure, from the unstable alpha form to beta.

You could simplify it to; the atoms are packed differently in alpha-form and beta-form. The gif shows the transition

What metal/compound is this, and how does this work, and what needs to be done to achieve this?

Pardon my lack of science.

I would assume so. Chemistry class taught me that literally nothing is impossible, you can make what appears to be snow in a test tube.

I've no idea what his is, but I reckon it's being oxidized, as in the air just makes it go like that. Funny, seeing as we breathe that stuff.
#105 - kmichel (09/20/2013) [-]
It's interesting how the oxidation comes in a wave, and doesn't touch the right side until the very end. It looks like a "seed" is needed to start the oxidation, in the same way that water won't freeze no matter how cold it is unless there's a spot for the first ice crystal to form.
User avatar #132 to #105 - iceangel (09/20/2013) [-]
That is what i noticed at first also. If this is some reaction akin to sodium then maybe that side was cut first , yet it still doesn't explain why the other side seems to not react at all.

I really want to know what this actually is and what it reacts
