No matter how far along the line you travel, they won't get any closer to eachother. If they ever do meet, then they are not parallel after all.

What it is saying is that if we stand really far away, the lines look like they are touching and therefore are. It is as hard to think about as why our government consists of the people it does.

Actually, parallel lines can meet if the space is curved

Yes, two parallel lines can meet depending on the geometric context. In the typical, standard context of Euclidean geometry, this is not possible. However, mathematics always "assumes" a certain context of restrictions and logical limitations (e.g. real numbers vs. complex plane). Real projective geometry is one in which parallel lines meet at a point at infinity. An interesting implication of this is that +infinity and -infinity are equal.
User avatar #196 to #17 - molestedbeggar (08/23/2013) [-]
parallel lines travel forever with never meeting which is sad
but every other line meet once and forever drift further apart. and this is also sad.

I honestly didn't know what an asymptote was or why I had saved this.
User avatar #61 to #57 - somenerd ONLINE (08/23/2013) [-]
An asymptote is a line that an equation can never reach but gets very close FOr example, if we have 1/x, it gets closer and closer to 0 but never quite reaches it.
#125 to #57 - anon (08/23/2013) [-]
used for graphs, they can get close as 1micromieter, but never do they cross each other. Something like this
why did i remeber this?
User avatar #82 to #57 - drtrousersnake ONLINE (08/23/2013) [-]
Foci'd in the asymptote and All Strippers Take Cash (All, sin, tan, cos) are the 2 thing i remember most about pre-cal in high school

They are often applied to equations to avoid confusion in any case, even though the equations aren't long and complicated. They serve no real function here, true, but it's not wrong to put them there

User avatar #268 to #257 - unikornking (08/23/2013) [-]
Always simplify the stuff in parentheses first. 360/4=90 and
2x=90
x=45
#301 to #268 - macbookfan (08/25/2013) [-]
So for it to be doubled it'd have to be X2?
I guess i got it
User avatar #302 to #301 - unikornking (08/25/2013) [-]
No.

2x=(360/4)
2x=90
2 time x=90
what is 90/2?
45
therefore x=45
