Hyena's are actually really dumb and really cowardly. If you turn your back, they'll attack, but if you look at them they cower and hide. Plus if you pour a little blood on a rock, they try to eat it.

so you're telling me that if im bleeding and trying to get away from a hyena, then i should pick up a rock, put some of my blood on it, and toss it at him while facing him trying to act scary?

1. Like Grizzally said, waiting for your prey to turn around is smart - many animals do it (e.g. Tigers)
2. They're not cowardly at all. They hunt more than lions do and they will even take on large numbers of crocodiles for as long as possible if it means getting food (e.g. if a baby elephant has died near a water and swarms of crocodiles are coming for it/eating it but the hyenas want it too)
3. I have no idea why you'd think they're dumb compared to your average animal

They'll usually only go after unhealthy prey. If you're a healthy person walking around, they'll likely run from you.

But again, that's a clever move on their part - if they went after a healthy buffalo and got kicked, they'd be severely injured and may die. They have more chance of catching something young or injured and therefore more chance of eating and surviving... Many animals do this...

That's pretty intelligent. Waiting for your prey to turn its back so you have a better chance of securing a kill.
