Interesting Fact: The man who invented the sewing machine, Elias Howe, finally figured out how to get the machine to work, when he had a strangely violent dream where cannibals told him he had to come up with a working design for the machine, or be killed. He failed and the cannibals began stabbing him with spears that had holes in the tips. He woke up and realized the putting a hole in the tip of the needle would work.

I only know because I read that on Cracked today

It isn't suspended, it's on an axle that's being rotated.
The circular part is a bar on the actual machine.
