A few minutes with 427 might work too, or use the clones of 500 made from 038.

I scrolled down halfway through the gif and thought they were killing an octopus or something with fire.

Personally, I think it's a thermite reaction, but I could be wrong of course.
#116 to #97 - eddymolly (06/22/2013) [-]
I believe its a reaction of Ammonium chromate (NH4Cr2O7) making Chromium Oxide (Cr2O3) to make the fire, with tablets of Mercury thiocyanate (HgSCN) or Pharaoh's serpent to make the tentacles.

Thermite tends to be much, much more violent of a reaction, plus it burns bright yellow not red, and tends to liquefy, not solidify.

Sodium acetate is what's commonly in hand warmers. It would be very warm and cozy to touch.

This is done by using supersaturation of a solute (sodium acetate) in a solvent (water):

Dissolve some sodium acetate in hot water. More than would normally dissolve at room temperature. Make sure there isn't any undissolved sodium acetate. Now leave it aside and let it cool to room temperature. If done right there won't be any solute at the bottom of the container. You now take a bit of undissolved sodium acetate and add it to the solution. Assuming it worked, all the "excess" sodium acetate that shouldn't be dissolved at room temperature will recrystallize.

An alternative explanation is magic, but that's too complicated for non-wizards to understand.

Imagine that happening in your body...
User avatar #22 to #18 - cumbersome (06/21/2013) [-]
It needs to be supercooled for that to happen, so it can't happen in the body.
User avatar #24 to #18 - onigirigiri (06/21/2013) [-]
If supercooling wasn't required, I'd imagine it being something along the lines of Guilty Crown. The pain D=

that would be uncomfortable seeing as it is an exothermic reaction and would be really hot
