The stitching on a baseball makes the airflow around it differantly which allows it to glide through the air like that. Very hard to do.

and years of training

if kids do a curve ball too early in baseball they can wreck their pitching arm
User avatar #152 to #3 - mariox ONLINE (05/24/2013) [-]
It takes years to perfect, its really just a matter of technique though. Search for hand positions ans such.
User avatar #42 to #3 - gtk (05/24/2013) [-]
The kind of ball he is using is called a "Junkball". It basically is a plastic ball with holes in it. When you cover a certain set of holes you will cause the ball to curve like that.

Baseball players however by applying different spins to the ball. This is caused by the seams on the ball cutting through the air. And theres the crazy ******* knuckleball which can go anywhere.. It doesnt spin at all on the way to the plate and can go in any direction at random. (see comment number 1)
User avatar #53 to #42 - fouringer (05/24/2013) [-]
But isnt that against the rules.
User avatar #158 to #53 - gtk (05/25/2013) [-]

How number #5 comment stated, its how the ball is held and manipulated. Stitching on the ball allows the pitcher to position his fingers and hand. As time progress's you begin to become aware of how you move with technique and power, which is to a pro pitcher level of understanding. Number 54 on the Cincinnati Reds (Chapman) has thrown a 105 mph pitch. However, the draw back to such difficult pitches can destroy your arm if used wrong, such as the Curve-ball at a young age. Pitchers who can throw difficult pitches tend to tired quicker. Also #5 stated that it is a wiffle ball, which can be easily manipulated with wind due to it's holes on the ball.
#5 to #3 - John Cena (05/24/2013) [-]
First off, that's a wiffle ball, and second, it's a mixture of how you hold the ball and the movement of your wrist upon release of the ball

I feel like everybody is missing this, there are wiffleballs made to curve. They have holes on one side which drastically can change air resistance and make it curve

Actually the more impressive thing is the rise ball...it's only possible to throw a riseball pitching underhand

No its just a hard spinning fastball. And it's a rising fastball not rise ball. That sounds like some childs toy

User avatar #64 to #25 - rantansoop (05/24/2013) [-]
A specially thrown knuckleball possibly could though, given the perfect orientation.
User avatar #103 to #64 - badmonkey ONLINE (05/24/2013) [-]
Isn't the point of a knuckle ball to throw it without spinning it so it disrupts the ballistics? and the basis of a curve ball is its spin? I'm no expert but that's what I've heard
#27 to #25 - John Cena (05/24/2013) [-]
Depends on the distance.
User avatar #28 to #27 - whatasickname (05/24/2013) [-]
it absolutely does not, my good sir. It depends on the air resistance on the surface of the ball. Wiffle balls have hollow centers with ridge-like foils on one side of the ball, specifically designed to make it curve great distances. Baseballs can be curved, yes, but are not purposefully designed to do so.
#32 to #28 - John Cena (05/24/2013) [-]
Had the target been closer or farther away the ball wouldn't have hit the same exact spot, so I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that distance does matter.
#29 to #28 - John Cena (05/24/2013) [-]
Distance isn't a variable. What kind of physics are you learning?
User avatar #36 to #29 - herberto (05/24/2013) [-]
Are you stupid?
Further distance means it has more time to curve back in.
#51 to #36 - trenttwentyeleven (05/24/2013) [-]
The reason distance isn't *considered* a variable in this equation/analysis is because you can't increase the distance of one throw without increasing the distance of the other throw. That would extremely skew the results, thereby nullifying the entire analysis. And if you increase the distance of both throws, both balls will continue to curve further. Which means the baseball will still not reach the magnitude of curve achieved by the wiffle ball.
#37 to #36 - John Cena (05/24/2013) [-]
Meant to put questionmark not period.

All you guys bitching about the wiffleball baseball curve crap... listen... On average a professionally thrown "curveball" with a wiffleball at 42 feet at a speed of 60 - 75 mph from plate to plate will break, give or take, about 3 to 4 feet. That's 36 to 48 inches. On average a professionally thrown "curveball" with a baseball at 60 feet at a speed of 90 - 105 mph from plate to plate will break will break at most, 14 - 16 inches. For a baseball to even match up the wiffleball's curvature when thrown, the pitcher of the baseball will have to throw a curveball in a category 5 hurricane. That's 155 mph of nothing but raw wind. Quit ya bitchin'. They're both cool to watch.
#100 to #48 - John Cena (05/24/2013) [-]
Since when can anyone throw a curve ball 90-105 mph? Even the hardest throwing pitchers don't throw curve balls over 85 mph.
