It does. You just use a piece of string and hold it tightly around their neck until they stop resisting. Sometimes they don't wake up again.

No, cats develop that reaction as kittens when their mother carries them around everywhere by the back of their neck. Basically, pinch that area of the neck and the cat will stop moving due to the fact they couldn't squirm while they were being carried, and they carry this reaction through their whole lives.
User avatar #66 - metalmind (05/11/2013) [-]
It's an instinct left from infancy.
A lot of mamals have it. When the mother bites softly into the neck to carry they simply freeze, so they can be carried safely. In German it's called "Tragestarre"
User avatar #91 to #66 - nevrit (05/11/2013) [-]
It's a nerve man
User avatar #110 to #91 - cormy (05/11/2013) [-]
It is not a nerve, you're simply lifting them by the scruff of their neck, which is just skin. There are no nerves that would be in the skin that would paralyze an animal.
You aren't crushing their spine, just lifting them by their skin.
#117 to #66 - anonomoz (05/11/2013) [-]

Yep, and if you've ever had the misfortune of being near two cats fornicating you'll see the male bite the female there while they make hideous noises.

This only works on cats that were brought up by their mothers for a few extra years, my cats were taken at half a year, so they never had a chance to be taught or carried by their mother by the scruff of their neck. So this doesn't work on them, they just roll over and are like 'the **** , bro. get this thing off me!' and start meowing.

I don't think it has to be years..months, perhaps. But my cats were both taken from their mothers as soon as they were old enough to be adopted and this still works on them. You have to get taken from the mother REALLY early for this instinct to not develop.

Have you ever seen when a feline picks up its cubs by the neck? or when cats mate the male also does that to the female... Vets usually grab them there to keep them still, but it seems this vet found a very helpful tip (it's very hard to examine cats in a clinic since you need to be restraining them all the time)

To he cat it feels like its mother is picking it up by the neck.

I wouldn't recommend. It works by cutting off nerve signals to and from the brain. If you do it incorrectly you could pinch a nerve or damage one.
#87 to #85 - anon (05/11/2013) [-]
Actualy it works because their mothers carrys them basicly by biting them in the neck carefully and simply lift them up and carry them around. As the cat is used to being carried in this manor when you do this it simply reacts like it did when it was a kitten and simply freeze up so their mother wont accidentaly drop them.
#89 to #87 - hunterhxc (05/11/2013) [-]
actually i just read an article that said that same thing. I had just always heard the nerve thing
User avatar #90 to #89 - nevrit (05/11/2013) [-]
It is most likely developed in that way for mating reasons. You'll never really see a cat that wants a barbed penis in her, but when the male bites that never you won't see the female move much. Essentially most of the time cats having sex is rape.
User avatar #97 to #90 - neutralgray (05/11/2013) [-]
Likewise with ducks. Duck rape is... disturbingly common.
#140 to #97 - dangosevenonethree (05/11/2013) [-]
True. Check out "true facts about the duck" on YouTube by Zefrank.
#88 to #87 - hunterhxc (05/11/2013) [-]
actually it doesn't because the same is true for a lot of small mammals who's mothers don't carry them like that.
User avatar #86 to #85 - TheSnakeShitter (05/11/2013) [-]
Thanks for the warning man
