Finally someone who recognises the difference
User avatar #23 to #21 - hardtuner (02/24/2013) [-]
i thought it is common knowledge that parkour is as fast from point a to point b, and freerunning doind the most tricks from point a to point b.

seems it's not common...
#43 to #23 - shinycharizard (02/24/2013) [-]
People don't really know the difference. Most of the time, these people call parkour practitioners "parkourists", rather than traceurs.
#45 to #43 - pewdieman (02/24/2013) [-]
I don't really like to think there is a difference. Both are movements of the body or some variation of it.

Most people who aren't serious about it and yell "PARKOUR" when doing anything related to jumping over things which is why I can see people viewing it like this. Still a funny post though.

The only thing that grinds my gears is when people say parkour is French for freerunning.

Yeah but parkour and freerunning are the same thing because they have all the same movements involved its just that parkour is the art of running away freerunning is parkour with flips and the same movement. if that is really you in that gif why are you practicing in a gym? a parkour gym sounds rediculous.
User avatar #55 to #53 - cookedspider (02/24/2013) [-]
Parkour teaches you to overcome obstacles physically or mentally (point a point b). Taking risks is very much a part of our lives, and Parkour teaches you to calculate them, understand your own fear and learn to overcome such obstacles. It can be used as an escape technique but also chasing as well, and or to get to a destination the fastest way the body can manage. However, freerunning is not getting from point a to point b. Freerunning is tricking and combining parkour techniques with your tricking, but you are neither going from point a to point b. Freerunning is an art of motion, taken outdoors to the urban areas but still shares some movements in gymnastics, dancing, martial arts, and other movements of art. Training in a gym is less risky when working on skill that is too brazen if taken to the outside world on first attempt. That is why gyms are built in the first place. Also, most, or all, professional parkour athletes and freerunners started out with gymnastics. I train in a gym because I want to learn things I was never able to learn on my own, and then take them outside when I'm ready.
Good day, anonymous, I hope you learned something from this.
User avatar #63 to #55 - ThpiderMan (02/24/2013) [-]
Freerunning is parkour with emphasis on flips and flourishes over speed and efficiency. Much easier way to differentiate.. All the other stuff you said is moot.

Not saying you're wrong, but i've been to tournaments that use the words on their signs as if they mean the same thing, and if the people hosting the events don't know the difference, you can't expect the average person to. Watch the movie "Traceurs", i think that's what it was called. It's a french film about the two sports and their cultural impacts.

This particular scene caused a sort of tradition in my house hold.

Because now, whenever someone runs, jumps over something, etc, someone shouts "PARKOUR" I don't know why, but we thought it was funny.
