My sister, her boyfriend and I were all planning on going to the air races that day... every time i see the original gif i want to ask people to stop it, but then i realize im being more ridiculous than Beyonces publicist.....

just read all that... its friggin dumb. the right trim tab was purposefully frozen in place. Im not an aviation expert, but that just seems like a bad idea.

A bunch of people died and got horribly injured. This is horrible. Oh wait... Is that Mario? Thumbs up!

People find amusement in the strangest things... In a bad way.

this sums up every 9/11 gif and picture nowadays, only in a much worse way.

I smiled until I realized what it was a clip of, then I chuckled. I may be a monster but so long as there are other people, I figure I'm in good company.

Holy **** ... my dad was there when that happened, he was like 50 away, and would have died, but the pilot and foam in his tank so there wasn't an explosion... also my dad's friend lost part of his leg from that, the prop blade slit off the lower area.
User avatar #27 to #19 - skeetonamber (02/15/2013) [-]

False.

The pilot had nothing to do with where the plane hit. I was in fact there, I did not just hear about it from someone who was.

When the plane "Galloping Ghost" lost control, it was put into a 17-G climb, instantly knocking out the pilot, Jimmy Leeward, who was 74 years old, and yes, still racing.

Also, there was no "foam" to prevent fire. The fire was squelched by the boil-off cooling system that Jimmy had installed. Essentially, when the engine got too hot, water was directed around it and dispersed as steam, hence boil-off. The cloud you see is not foam, it is steam, av-gas, and liquefied asphalt.

well considering my dad is a pilot and talked to me about this and somewhat knew jimmy, i'm going to have to disagree with you. I'm not saying he crashed the plane on purpose, but the new system that was installed caused either a trim tab or something else to fall of which caused him to spiral out, then go into a 17-g turn which made him unconscious and he slouched over the yoke which cause him to nose dive into the ground, second off the cooling system you're talking about is also refered to as a foam, which is why you see blue **** fly all over.

And one last thing, if you read the comments everyone is blaming the pilot for the "undocumented and untested major modifications to the airplane" which is in the article.
