Like in that movie, Slayer. With the guy from Dexter.

Pretty pathetic.
When a predator can't even catch a prey that is given to it in a sealed box, I would kill the snake and keep the mouse since it is clearly a superior animal.

Except that snake can, and will, just hold still for a month until the mouse comes to it. Patience the likes of which no mammal can comprehend is their super-power.

I had to give my snake frozen baby mice.

He still wouldn't eat it until I cut their necks open and he could smell them.

Everyone thinks I'm insane now.

I mean like he wouldn't smell them unless he could smell blood, so I had to do it or he wouldn't eat...

Because he was so lazy, he makes this snake look like Bruce Lee.

As a snake owner I would never do that to either animal :( I always feed my snake prekilled mice because A) I don't have the heart to kill the mouse myself and B) live mice are a serious threat to your snake. They will fight for their lives and can mangle the snake with their teeth and claws if you let them. My friend had a snake that didn't kill its supper before it swallowed. The rat chewed its way out of the snake's throat and the poor little guy drowned in his own blood.

Also this is a pic of my sweet lady Andromeda. She likes her fat cheeks to be rubbed.
User avatar #112 to #57 - bigken (12/22/2012) [-]
My brother used have snakes and he had to start killing the mice himself because one of the younger pythons kept getting bitten the mice fighting back. It was covered in bite marks one time from feeding.

Jesus Christ that is BRUTAL.
#73 to #57 - fireheartftw (12/22/2012) [-]
Also, if you feed a snake dead mice, the snake is less likely to bite you. It sees its food as something not living. If you feed it live mice, it thinks that something that moves must be food.

Good to see another bp keeper!

Here's my smug little bastard.

D'AWWW! Is he an albino or a piebald? I just can't get over ball python faces. They are too darn cute! My goal in life is to get a coral glow and name her Percephine :3

One day I had Andy around my shoulders and suddenly she was gone. The pic is what happened
#81 to #79 - oneironaut (12/22/2012) [-]
He's a blue-eyed leucistic, actually! Mojave-Lesser.

I'm a real sucker for even the simplest of python morphs - I'd love to own a queen bee, bumble bee, lesser, lesser bee, purple passion, pewter, super pewter, super black pastel.. I could go on for hours so I'll just stop here xD

For the first two months of owning him (he's still unnamed!) I couldn't get him to eat. He'd show absolutely no interest, even though I'd tried feeding him over a dozen times.

I tried feeding all sorts of pinkies, but he ignored them entirely or just examined them, but never striking (pic related)

Eventually, because I feared he was losing weight, I had to feed him a live pinkies as a last resort - It was of no danger to him, seeing as the pinkie's eyes hadn't even developed.

It was weird. Feeding live was heartbreaking, since I love all animals, but I was ecstatic to see that he'd finally eaten and gotten some nutrition in him.
I'm hoping to convert him back to f/t soon.

SorryI'verambled

I've got a bumblebee and a lesser=) I'm gonna breed them next year and get some sweet babies. If i get a queen bee or lesserbee I will be thrilled!
User avatar #162 to #154 - oneironaut (12/22/2012) [-]
Lucky you!

I'd like to get a female bumble bee and maybe breed her with him. I'd have a chance of queen bees and lesser bees, and .. Mojave bees? and Pastaves. And everything inbetween.
User avatar #87 to #81 - lolerlaura (12/22/2012) [-]
I feel the same way. I am so glad that Andy is a pig and has never refused a meal. Have you tried getting the dead feeder to bleed a bit? I hear that helps. Or try feeding at night in a darkened room and put a towel around the tank so the snake can't see you, that helps make them less stressed and paranoid during feeding. I bet he is still adjusting and will come around.
User avatar #91 to #87 - oneironaut (12/22/2012) [-]
I feel he's either still adjusting, or maybe it's just because it's winter.

I didn't try that.. I'll keep it in mind.
Getting him to eat live proved difficult as well. For the first four hours he ignored it, went in his hide and went to sleep.

I got pretty worries/annoyed, so what I did was take out the hide he was in, and put his other hide on the hot end of the tank. I left the pinkie in there.

What I think happened was, out in the now open/bare side of the tank, he felt vulnerable and made his way over to the hide on the hot side.
I'm guessing he wasn't too happy to find a pinkie taking up all the room in there - so I might try that method again.
User avatar #96 to #91 - lolerlaura (12/22/2012) [-]
Well good luck with your boy! Royals can go for months without eating so don't worry too much. You should see if you can find your local herpitological society over the web, they are a great community for any snake owner, new or experienced. They have a lot of good tips for bad eaters.

Oh I know, I know xD I was only worried because he's not even a yearling yet.

I have seen such sites! They're great.

sorry if you take me as an idiot but I always wondered, what are the reasons someone chooses to make a snake their pet? are they doing something similar to other animals? like idk, play, feel affection or something? I ask because the snakes seemed to me like emotionless creatures since forever :D
#82 to #66 - lolerlaura (12/22/2012) [-]
All animals have personalities and snakes are included. It just takes being around the animal for a while to see it. I converted my good friend from a snake hater to snake lover because of how chill and lovable Andromeda is. I was showing her off and holding her when she started to vigorously rub and nuzzle my hand for about 10 minutes. We were laughing our asses off but she wouldn't stop.

I have always wanted a snake since I was a little kid so I finally just got myself one. I love the way they feel and move and they can be pretty funny too. I can understand how someone wouldn't like them though and I respect that. My friend says he is afraid of them because they don't have any legs and move in a weird way. I can understand that because I hate spiders for a similar reason, they have too many legs and move in a weird way.
User avatar #85 to #66 - TwistedBamboozler (12/22/2012) [-]
If you own them from birth or very young, they can start to learn their names and feel affection. If you raise them properly they can be great companions.
