to all people thinking this is an actual fail it is not, he purposely did that bad because if he made it then the other team would get the ball. the team needed more than one point so they were risking on the fact his team would recover the botched shot and make a three pointer or something.

You have to hit the rim or the other team automatically gets the ball.

I do not think you're statement is correct due to the fact that he didn't hit the rim nor the backboard and his own team recovered it. Therefore the ball was turned over to the opposing team.

I would agree with this, but there was 11:07 left on the game clock when it showed a close-up of him shooting, so with that much time left in the game this argument doesn't make sense (unless I'm missing something else).
