actualy, when a plane is crashing/decending/bouncing, people get really quiet and pray to god n ****

trust me

i know

ive been on a plane that dropped a hundred feet in midair for no apparent reason, it was deathly quiet(also if anyone wants to learn me how a ******* airplane drops in midair before returning to normal id love to know)

A cold air pocket has a much lower density. Fly in a warm front with propellers going at 1000RPM then all of a sudden into a cold pocket... you need 2000RPM to maintain speed otherwise you just drop. Its like swimming in a pool of water, and then in syrup. Granted, syrup is delicious but you still need to use alot more energy to swim through that thick stuff. If you exert the same swimming energy from water in the syrup, you will go nowhere but down. (note, RPM values are not accurate)
#41 to #24 - ripcaster (12/04/2012) [-]
Other way round my friend. Cold air is more dense, so if you're flying through "warm" air and hit a region of more dense air your lift will increase given the same airspeed. You will go up. That said, air in the atmosphere is in a tremendous state of flux, always churning up down and all around. More likely the "pocket" of air you hit was travelling downward or the same direction as the plane, the latter of which would decrease your airspeed and consequently, lift.

thank you for learning me friend

How big can these pockets be? Big enough to make the plane crash?
User avatar #63 to #40 - trawllor (12/04/2012) [-]
been a pilot for 3 years now.
let me just say; no.
downdrafts arnt very big usually. and always accompanied by rising air currents.
pilots will recover the plane before youll lose any major altitude.
especially airline pilots. theyre very experienced. plus, the airline jets fly at a very high altitude.
any more questions? :P
User avatar #67 to #63 - alstorp (12/04/2012) [-]
You're a pilot? So cool. Okay then, i have one more question. What's your pay? I've just heard that airline pilots gets paid a lot.
User avatar #68 to #67 - trawllor (12/04/2012) [-]
they do, but im a recreational pilot.
so i only fly for fun, and occasional transport when necessary. im actually an auto mechanic. :P
uncle's an actual airline pilot though, hes well off from what ive seen.

"Like a hooker for a twenty"

That joke could not have been aimed at my sense of humor better. THIS has made my night more than anything else. Thanks
#31 - messerschmidto (12/04/2012) [-]
Chances are, you've been hit by lighting multiple times while in flight.
Thanks to the fact that planes are made of aluminum, all surges of electrical power coming from a source such as lightning are safely channeled out through static wicks on the wings.

If your plane were to be hit by lightning, you would here a slight thud, a possibly the slightest of jolts.

You have no idea how safe planes are.

User avatar #38 to #36 - messerschmidto (12/04/2012) [-]
I don't know much about electro magnetic pulse weapons; I assume the charge is directed in a much different way than lightning.

As a pilot, I can tell you. That still ******* sucks. Try flying a plane blind for 2-10 minutes.
User avatar #33 to #14 - messerschmidto (12/04/2012) [-]
Do you fly small propeller planes? Lightning strikes hardly affect larger jet aircraft.
#73 to #33 - sytheris (12/04/2012) [-]
Lightning = bright as **** .

Pretty sure he meant flash blindness, not that the controls of the plane went down.

Unless i mis-understood your response.
User avatar #93 to #73 - messerschmidto (12/04/2012) [-]
Oh, that's what he meant. I thought he meant all his instruments were fried and he had to recalibrate them.
User avatar #105 to #33 - agasti (12/05/2012) [-]
No I mean purely the flash blindness. I fly small utility and regional prop air couriers.

I wasn't gonna argue, I'm not a liberal. Republicans say **** just as bad as liberals though.
#29 to #28 - messerschmidto (12/04/2012) [-]
It's not so much the stupidity, it's just the propaganda they force feed themselves.

I waiting in class the other day, and a whole bunch of liberals were sending each other photo shopped images of Romney doing stupid stuff, and slathering Obama with praise with no logical backup.

But I've never been to a conservative community, so maybe it's the same there. I hope not.
User avatar #60 to #29 - bulbakip (12/04/2012) [-]
I'd rather live in a conservative community where everyone waves flags and goes "god and 'merica is great!" than to deal with the elitist convoluted arguments of liberals.

User avatar #59 to #29 - bulbakip (12/04/2012) [-]
just think more fear based ideology, reactionary, biggoted, and xenophobic. oh and also nazi-ish with social issues.

but liberals are more naive about how supply and demand, and free trade works. And they tend to be arrogant enough to think they know what is best for everybody. Think naivety with arrogance.

User avatar #30 to #29 - lowlifescarecrow (12/04/2012) [-]
It's worse.
User avatar #32 to #30 - messerschmidto (12/04/2012) [-]
That's a shame. But propaganda has never really been my thing.

I maintain my conservative views in the domains of economy, size of the federal government, and foreign policy.

I honestly don't really care much about social issues like gay marriage and abortion; I don't think those issues belong in politics. They're simply bandwagons.
#35 to #32 - Matengel (12/04/2012) [-]

that moment when I realized that Iroh(Prince Zuko's uncle) was teaching him "lightning bending", but it was actually teaching him the earliest principles of the "Fairday cage" with his own body.

nothing. planes have a physical situation called a fairday cage that reroutes the electricity around the outside of the plane without it damaging the parts or passengers
