Cats that fall from over 12 stories have a higher survival rate than those that fall between 5 and 12 stories (~10 feet/story). This is because cat's are able to reach terminal free fall speed from this height, and without the acceleration they loosen up. Tense falls are responsible for the injury, so a larger fall will allow the cat to become more relaxed and therefore less prone to fatal impact injuries. In theory, the majority of cats that fall from any given height above 12 stories (120 feet to infinity) would survive impact, and would live if their injuries (if any) are treated shortly after.

TL;DR Cat's are more likely than not to survive a fall from any height over 120 feet.

(I'm not trying to be a smart-ass; just thought this was a cool thing to share that we discussed in physics last week)

I'll keep this in mind if I ever fall from an extreme height. Relax and I'll be fine.

No, we aren't cats.
#104 to #88 - anon (11/15/2012) [-]
Fun fact: a man survived being thrown a distance of 200 feet by a tornado. He was not conscious at the time and so, could not tense himself on impact.
Relaxing your muscles will cause less damage than tensing.
#125 to #88 - sathrax (11/15/2012) [-]
yeah, besides, you got a better idea?

No?

Didn't think so.
User avatar #147 to #81 - points (11/15/2012) [-]
The only reason cat's survive falls when they are not tense is because their terminal velocity is non-lethal thanks to their fur and body shape. Our terminal velocity, however, is fatal. Cat's are one of the largest animals that have a non-lethal terminal velocity.

Ahhh! Woooh! What's happening? Who am I? Why am I here? What's my purpose in life? What do I mean by who am I? Okay okay, calm down calm down get a grip now. Ooh, this is an interesting sensation. What is it? Its a sort of tingling in my... well I suppose I better start finding names for things. Lets call it a... tail! Yeah! Tail! And hey, what's this roaring sound, whooshing past what I'm suddenly gonna call my head? Wind! Is that a good name? It'll do. Yeah, this is really exciting. I'm dizzy with anticipation! Or is it the wind? There's an awful lot of that now isn't it? And what's this thing coming toward me very fast? So big and flat and round, it needs a big wide sounding name like 'Ow', 'Ownge', 'Round', 'Ground'! That's it! Ground! Ha! I wonder if it'll be friends with me? Hello, Ground!

The cat seriously looks like it KNOWS it's screwed.. Kind of makes me question how self-aware they are/aren't...
User avatar #40 - reican (11/15/2012) [-]
the real question isn't "will it land on its feet" the REAL question is " Will it blend?"
User avatar #82 - KayRed (11/15/2012) [-]
I guess they are testing the theory that cats are more likely to survive a fall the higher up they are.

I would think they do, their terminal velocity would not be fatal though (the idea being that a cat would have time to adjust and reach the slower terminal velocity).
User avatar #29 - MindBombExplosions (11/14/2012) [-]
The real question is " will he survive when he land on his feet ?"
#30 to #29 - autoxx (11/14/2012) [-]
Yes, a cat is one of the largest animals with a non-lethal terminal velocity.
The hair length (drag) depicts if it breaks it's legs though.
