thats a pretty cool notion. and I'd love the same thing! but that **** is expensive, and unless you want your will to be a burden to your family after you pass away, you gotta save for it.

But I think that's something worthy

Indeed good sir. However id never compromise my children's funds im just hoping when I save the money ill have enough for the men at NASA to take my ashes with them to space and just video record it for my family as my final adventure.

If I remember right, some of the cast from star trek have had their ashes scattered up there (or ejected within a pod to float in space)

I think it might even be easier on one's family, having you there to look over them all the time in one sence.

either way it's a pretty cool notion. Kudos man!

Even if this is a computer simulation, that's a pretty accurate amount of stars. And every little one of those glimmering stars probably holds several planets. And to think some people believe Earth is the only planet that holds life.

life? very likely

intelligent life? not nearly as likely.

just look at Earth. how many intelligent species (IE we can communicate with them etc) exist on the Earth? ... about one.

Yes, primitive life is naturally more common than "intelligent" life, but even bacteria are life and have the potential to evolve to intelligence. Through the process of evolution, wouldn't it be most likely that one planet has just one intelligent species? Say two species evolve to near intelligence, they would soon be competing for resources and territory, eventually eliminating one of them. If both species would survive long enough to achieve intelligence, they would most likely have evolved from some common ancestor and be breeding with each other, diluting the genetic pool, creating a single species with several races, e.g caucasian, asian, african etc.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that if life exists, I believe in time it will always develop intelligence, and there will always be a species that is more intelligent than the others on that planet and ending up as the only intelligent race there. It's all a matter of time. Isn't earth a relatively young planet? We are probably a young intelligence, perhaps other worlds have had so much more time to develop that sentient life isn't as uncommon as we might like to think?

that's the point of the Drake Equation

some estimates using the Drake Equation show that the number of intelligent civilizations in our galaxy should be less than one. including us. others show that there should be multiple civilizations.

it all depends on how life develops, but we don't have any models to compare with the Earth

oh, and we don't know the lifespan of an intelligent species. so far, we've survived a few thousand years. in galactic terms, that's a very very very very very small window of time. it's possible that intelligent life is common, but that only one species exists at a time because of how short they last (I hope that isn't true. I want us to exist long enough to explore space).
