when electrons hit each other, it releases energy in the form of heat. electricity is basically just a flow of electrons. if enough electrons are put through a given wire, it will heat up because of this. (ever experienced this?) thats why wires have a wattage limit on them. too much power and they become fire hazards. in the case of the coin, a very large amount of power has been put through the leads and into the coin. the visual is how the coin reacts to the heat transfer. its looks like some sort of enamel burns off first, then something else brass like, then the coin turns red hot like most metals do.

tldr - gobs of electricity, probably from a big transformer.

So the rods grinding on the surface caused a spark, and lit the coin on fire?

the rods are electrified. plugged into the wall. the penny contacts both sides together allowing electrical current to travel. the coin is not, "on fire" either. it is heating up from the amount of electrons flowing through it. I would recommend you take a physics class in your future, you will learn all about this.

Question...
Is it only in Ireland that in secondary schools that you do proofs of theorums?
Not trolling, genuinely curious :)

no, the proof was in the book, but for some reason it never clicked in my head. basically i knew the formula and how to apply it but seeing this as an animation and showing how each side is converted to a side of a square really explained it to me. (of course i learned this stuff 25 years ago, so it's possible that all details of this particular proof has slipped my mind.)

Oh okay, because last year in maths we had 10 theourums we had to prove, one of which was this one...
We have to prove why it has its rule... :D

i vaguely remember having to having to do proofs but for some reason i remember them more like scientific formulas and using words instead of visual representations. this would have been incredibly more easy to learn.

Yeah we kind of do it like this, With diagrams.
In my opinion it is easier to incorperate it when you understand it.

No, some teachers just teach it differently or not at all. Chalk it up to lazy teachers, not an inherent fail of the American education system. That said, the American education system fails. Even teachers I talk to agree with this.

The Irish education system is good, but can also be a little over the top.
For the equivalent of the SAT's (End of high school exams) we have English, Irish and Maths as manditory.
Then 3 other subjects are minimum...
Even if you need only one subject for the University course you want,
All the courses(apart from some art courses)are based on a points system from those 6 subjects..

I know quite a bit about the Irish educational system because my boyfriend's from Ireland. His family still lives there, but he moved to America when he was a teenager.

Also, over the top is a lot better than under par. :p

Internet FTW :)

Popularity is subjective. You believe all the "cool people" to be the internet traffickers because that's your ideology of a cool person.

Suppose for a second that your knowledge of memes and the like make you to be the only not cool person at your school.

Regardless, all my real friends are internet goers, and my boyfriend's a /b/tard, so life's good. :p

,I love being irish :)

I'm not going to be stereotypical "oh god America sucks", but I'd like to have been born somewhere else. But it's not a bad country, especially if you're middle-class, straight, and white.

And yeah, Ireland does sound like quite the beautiful place, tbh. I plan to visit it one day.
