Look up the Ford RS200. Rally cars like these were so dangerous for spectators and drivers that the Group B was shut down in the mid eighties. Imagine a bunch of fire breathing, ear drum rupturing, 700 hp, 1800 lb monsters doing 130 mph on a narrow dirt path meant for horses and buggies. That was group B.

Problem could have easily been resolved by letting the owner calm the dog down. On too many occasions are there cases of police abusing the tools they have, engaging in reckless decisions, and in many cases using their power to oppress. This scenario is one of reckless decision making. People have a right to be upset, including the dog's owner. I'm getting real tired of people making excuses for this type of behavior.

Hawthorne, Ca Police Kill Dog(1)
okay so there's a lot of people deciding what happened to a gif that's in reverse. watch the video and decide for yourself who's right.
basic breakdown of the video: owner was being an asshat and provoking police by very obviously filming some kind of drug bust it appears, police approach him for doing this, owner puts dog in car with windows down, police cuff man, dog flips his **** and jumps out of car, police hesitate before shooting they DO NOT just shoot it right away, owner attempts to calm dog by hissing and kick toward it, dog lunges at police officer and he takes the shot.

in my opinion, the officer here is in the right for defending himself. and all of you ******* screaming animal cruelty and alternative solutions need to go suck on a spike. the officer saw no other way to get out without losing a limb or a life than to take down the dog. if anyone, blame the retarded owner for provoking the police and not securing the beast properly.
#88 to #84 - arstya (05/09/2014) [-]
I like how everyone is saying "omg fuk the cops!" when the dog clearly went for the officer. Yes the dog wanted to protect his owner, but it doesn't change that fact.
#2 to #1 - anon (05/08/2014) [-]
The best thing to do in that situation would be to let the owner calm the dog down, not ******* shoot it! Jesus christ some people are cruel! **** !
#5 to #2 - thechosentroll (05/08/2014) [-]
Are you a dog owner? Cause I am, so I hate seeing dogs get hurt in any way. However, there are few things scarier than a dog trying to protect its' young or owner. If a dog that size bites down on your arm with full force (which it will), it can shatter the bones so badly you can't even fix that **** . Not to mention the fact that it can easily kill you. While I agree that he shouldn't have killed the dog, the guy didn't really have much of a choice, since he had so little time to react. And don't give me that "I would have found another way to solve the problem." **** . No, you'd have either done the same or **** yourself, fallen to the ground and had your throat ripped off, because a dog thought you were going to kill its' owner.
#9 to #5 - anon (05/08/2014) [-]
I'm not mad about him shooting the dog, i am mad about him not properly killing it. That dog was in a lot of pain for some time, a headshot rarely = instant death when it's animals (i'm a hunter). The spasm its making is the brain reacting to the pain and sending all the ******* signals it can telling the rest of the body "Hey we got pain here, ******* run cause else we die"
#6 to #5 - anon (05/08/2014) [-]
yea or maybe if the officer was not taunting the animal at any point he wouldn't have had the need to attack the cop. it clearly shows in the video the cop lunging and kicking the air in front of the dog looking for a reaction. the only dog that size we gotta watch for is your mom any ways.

#58 to #43 - anon (05/09/2014) [-]
straight from dictionary.com: "unverified, unofficial information gained or acquired from another and not part of one's direct knowledge"
if you provided something of evidential value(i.e. the video where it "clearly" shows the cop instigating the dog attack), it would not be hearsay; but you didn't. So yes, it's hearsay.

honestly it looks to me like if anyone was the one who got the dog riled up to attack, it was his owner fighting and struggling against the cops which would obviously prompt the dog to react to protect its' owner. i'm sad the dog died, but you can't really expect a trained police officer not to react to an imminent threat

User avatar #16 to #5 - tatwis (05/08/2014) [-]
A police officer should be trained to react in situations like this. I have seen the full video, it was pretty obvious the dog was going to react. They had enough time to taze that thing. I guess this was expected from a police force that has obese policemen.
User avatar #21 to #16 - sirformidio (05/08/2014) [-]
Police officers can't be trained to react to every situation.
And endlessly, Human Life > Animal life, every time.
User avatar #78 to #21 - tatwis (05/09/2014) [-]
So you're saying an angry dog is a one in a million situation?
User avatar #103 to #78 - sirformidio (05/09/2014) [-]
I'm saying that a dog attacking you while the owner is calm in an already intense situation in which nobody can make the dog chill the **** out leaving you with a split second decision to either potentially suffer major injury at the jaws of a dog plus the risk of serious infection/illness or shoot him where he stood, ending his life unnecessarily but allowing you to walk away unscathed is certainly a rare one.
User avatar #69 to #16 - majordraco ONLINE (05/09/2014) [-]
LOL, "taze" an animal, you need some education.
User avatar #79 to #69 - tatwis (05/09/2014) [-]
If not tazing then there should be another way of calming the dog
User avatar #92 to #79 - majordraco ONLINE (05/09/2014) [-]
Okay I actually have a leg to stand on here, I have ten years professional dog training experience and have been raising various farm animals. Any method to try and calm any animal has a certain failure rate, and is not worth the risk of the officer's life. So all responsibility for calming the dog needs to be on the owner.
Also tazing is not a word
User avatar #94 to #92 - tatwis (05/09/2014) [-]
It's pretty pathetic how the police can only shoot a dog if it's a threat
User avatar #95 to #94 - majordraco ONLINE (05/09/2014) [-]
Well the owner is the one responsible, if the dog was secured, the dog would be alive.
User avatar #96 to #95 - tatwis (05/09/2014) [-]
Imagine a situation. Police come to arrest some person in the street, who is passed out or really drunk and is laying on the floor so is unable to do anything. Next to him is his dog, an angry pitbull. What does the police do?
User avatar #97 to #96 - majordraco ONLINE (05/09/2014) [-]
Kill the dog, and it's the owners fault.

Two reasons,
1) Dog unsecured.
2) Voluntarily incapacitated owner while trying to take care of a dog.

I guess, but I don't see how you can own an animal, and not hold ultimate responsibility for it.

If any one is seriously threatened they should use whatever force necessary to protect themselves.
User avatar #93 to #92 - majordraco ONLINE (05/09/2014) [-]
Even if he tried to use his Taser,
1) because animals have thicker skin and more hair, it usually wont work.

2) Some times people can fight through getting shocked, the risk of an animal doing this is even higher.
User avatar #3 to #2 - spongeychicken (05/08/2014) [-]
sure lets just let the dog bite people until the owner calms down I'm not actualy entirely sure what happened there but from what I can remember reading I based my opinion off
#17 to #3 - lolfacejimmy (05/08/2014) [-]
the owner was telling the cops to let him put the dog back in the car owner was calm as **** I have seen the whole video unfortunately
User avatar #85 to #2 - Dember ONLINE (05/09/2014) [-]
Unfortunately, once you lose control of an animal to begin with, it's not a matter of "calming the dog down" - the moment you lose control, that dog is out to do damage. Even if the owner DID want to (and many wouldn't give a **** ), you wouldn't really have the opportunity to sprint over and go "Oh, so sorry Officer, my bad, let me just pry my dog's teeth off your forearm and I'll have him behaving properly again in just a moment. Silly rascal!"

That said, I don't know the full story here and have not seen the full video. From what it LOOKS like, the dog was lunging up and either did bite, or was going to bite, and you wouldn't know which it was going to decide on until it already did it.

It would be only reflex to defend yourself against an animal IF it was acting aggressive and charging at people - that dog could seriously or even fatally injure someone; and if it attacked a pedestrian, that would be on you for neglecting to do your job and keep people safe.
It's a shame that the owner didn't train or contain it properly, and of course the animal has to pay the price. It's certainly not the dog's fault, but it's not the cop's fault either.

On the other hand, if it was just running around loose, it really should have been taken care of by Animal Control instead. From what I can see, it was running up to people and jumping on them, so that may not have been the case though.
Just my two cents.

I saw that video, the owner of the dog seemed to be doing something to provoke the officers, who were standing at a distance, and when the officers started walking towards him, he put the dog in his car, which had the windows down. the man kept doing whatever it was he was doing, which resulted in the cops cuffing him. dog then proceeds to bark, jump out the window, then run towards the officer.

TL;DR, dog got hostile, started to attack, cop defended himself/herself
User avatar #71 to #1 - ktom (05/09/2014) [-]
**** those red thumbs. I agree with you 100%. The guy being arrested in the video had been merely taking pictures or filming them, and they were going to take him for "disrupting their investigation" they easily could have foreseen his dog which was with him in the beginning before they tried to apprehend him coming to attack them, and instead of being upstanding people, they continued with their useless arrest and didn't let the guy calm his dog down before they ******* SHOT IT. **** them. seriously.
