I think taking them out of their normal environment would make it way easier to do without it than if they simply had it removed from their homes for awhile.
Source: I quit smoking when I moved to another country, without even really trying. The environment was different, my old habits did not apply to it, and so I didn't even crave them. It probably helped that a pack went from $3.50 to ******* $17 and I couldn't afford it, but still I stopped craving them at all.
