Centripetal force would push the water towards the center of the fan. Inertia was the word you were looking for, and I have a feeling the fan would break or be noticed before the person turned it on.

circle spinny force
is the scientfic name
#239 to #230 - jordaniac (05/21/2010) [-]
I think you are referring to centrifugal force. Centripical force doesn't exist. Or at least, hasn't been discovered yet.
#257 to #239 - John Cena (05/21/2010) [-]
Centripical force is the one that exists - it's the inward force. Some people say that centrifugal force actually does "exist", but it's simply the reaction or the centripical (the equal and opposite reaction of the inward force), and most people consider it as nonexistant.
#372 to #257 - jordaniac (05/22/2010) [-]
THERE IS NO SUCH GODDAMN THING AS CENTRIPICAL FORCE. **** , I wonder if some people are really as stupid as they let on.
#258 to #257 - John Cena (05/21/2010) [-]
*of* the centripical
#256 to #239 - John Cena (05/21/2010) [-]
Centripical force is the force acting when an object is pulled inwards by a spinning object, ie, an olive in a glass will be pulled upward into a glass if the glass is rotated.

#129 to #115 - John Cena (05/21/2010) [-]
Hate to break it to ya, but it is centrifugal. Centripetal acts towards the centre and keeps it going in a circle. If you want to give what makes the water shoot out a name, you need to add in a pseudo 'centrifugal' force to make everything work out.
#147 to #129 - jkunderwood (05/21/2010) [-]
Hate to break it to ya, but there is no such thing as Centrifugal force. Inertia is what pushes the water away from the axis of rotation.
#162 to #147 - John Cena (05/21/2010) [-]
I suppose you could call it inertia, from outside the from that's what keeps it going in a straight-as-possible line. If you're inside a non-inertial frame (such as this) you need to to add a pseudo force (in this case centrifugal) acting in the opposite direction to acceleration (in this case centripetal) for newton's 2nd law to hold.

So yes, centrifugal pseudo forces do exist.

(grammer nazis i am very sorry i was to busy learning stuff i would actually use in my life to worry about spelling)
User avatar #56 to #54 - Eralfnoez (05/20/2010) [-]
Actually it would be centrifugal force, as it's vector is away from the center of the circular path the bag is making.. "Centripetal" force is toward the center. Just so you know :3
#59 to #56 - unkiesam (05/20/2010) [-]
Centrifugal force is pushing the water out, centripetal force is moving the bag along the same path of acceleration as the fan blades, all acceleration of a rotating object is directed towards the center of the object.

Although in all fairness, the quote in the pic DOES say "centripecal force will push the water out"...

well played...
