you expect a 9MM or .40 S&W to stop a fully grown bear?

no, but a most of the time one shot will scare it away, and maybe a couple well placed shots will stop it from charging you .

Your best bet is to back away slowly, firing at the bear will only anger it and make you a threat, which will make the bears priority eliminating the threat. Bears have tough skin good luck using a taser.

so your saying that people in Alaska shouldn't carry firearms when they are out in the woods and other places because firing a warning round would make the bears angry instead of running? lolol why do you think people carry firearms in areas with bears? its definitely not to anger the bears, its to scare the bears away from them. when a bear charges them they dont automatically shoot it , they fire a warning shot that is most likely to scare them away cuz backing away "slowly" when a bear is charging you isn't gonna help worth **** and only show that you are scared of it, witch making it want to kill you more. standing your ground and firing a warning shot is the best way to stop a bear from charging you.

Dude relax, I never said any of that, but if it's a large enough caliber that would make the bear think "oh **** my body is in a lot of pain maybe I should back off" then by all means, but that's a completely different situation, they'll be better equipped for a bear. This a police officer which tend to carry either 9MM or .40S&W that is not something that would bring down a bear. Now we have a miscommunication here you're stating that the bear is already charging, I'm thinking that the bear has shown itself and is exerting it's presence in an attempt to get you step away from the cub.

So basically what you're saying is that even if I gib the entire clip to its face it will still continue charging me and I stand no chance?

One might just slow it down, depending on what it hits but I think 2 or 3 is enough stop the charge or atleast give you enough time to get more hits. I don't know how tough bears are. I honestly have no idea. But I can't imagine getting hit 5 times in the face and survive that.

a bears skull is to think and hard for a standard cops 9mm to pierce it, that is why i said a coupe well placed shots.

The thing is there's many factors to take into consideration, the speed at which it's charging, your adrenaline, your fear, your accuracy. but if you can land 5-6 clean shots to the face, then yea I think it'll stop.

im sorry but you have a misunderstanding of how moma bears act when you are that close to its cub, even when your 30 feet away a moma bear is highly threatened and will start charging. Im also not talking about killing the bear unless you heave to, you want to fire a warning shot, because of how loud a gun shot is will most likely scare it away and if it doesnt, the cop would have to place a couple well placed shots to take it down, it isnt impossible to kill a bear with a small caliber. but yes a higher caliber like a .357 would do the job in killing a bear.

Possibly 80-90% I've never come face to face with one as I've spent my entire life in the city so you might be correct.

ive watched a couple bear documentary's so thus is why i say these things to fire a warning shot, and not to run because it will provoke it to attack you even more.

Well I don't mean turn around and run, if there's one thing I've learned is never turn your back on an animal. I meant more along the lines of slowly walking backwards, and of course draw your firearm some protection is better than none.
